Thats crazy. So the guy new what he was doing with the chlorine tabs? I mean, I would think he would, but some people are just dim witted.
:eek2:

Pocurran, I have heard people, whether they are small kids or adults call any clownfish nemo ever since the movie came out. It gets old quick.
Kids shouting it can be annoying, but for some reason adults saying it bothers me more.
Though every now and then you get a ray of sunshine and a little kid will say "hey mommy its a clownfish!" and then I can't help but smile. :)

what worse is today a kid said " i want a betta"

dad says" oh you mean a beta"

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

what was his intention? to kill the corals so they wouldn't have to suffer?
I wouldn't be surprised if it was competition.

Not a LFS story, but goes hand-in-hand with the "Nemo" crowd:
I've been to both the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the National Aquarium in Baltimore this past year. I dread when I see the reef tanks because I know it's coming . . .
"Where are the Nemo fish?"
"Where's Dori?"
"Look honey it's Nemo!"

The kids I can take, but it's the parents who get to me . . .
I got so frustrated at the National Aquarium because it was so packed and I had parents on all sides telling their kids about stupid Nemo fish in stereo. I was on the verge of cracking and yelling, "Nemo was a gimpy freak fish with apparent bad genetics who should have been culled!"
My wife pulled me out before I had the chance . . .
I swear, I won't ever let any of my future children see Finding Nemo until they are old enough to clean my tanks!

Love it!!! Can I quote you in a loud shrieking voice next time I hear it?

yeah you can, they are animals, not toys

Absolutely right! Old story, but we were in our LFS that had an excellant manager who trained his staff well - made sure that all the questions were asked before a sale. But the saying is really true: Make something foolproof and they come up with a better fool. We were there the day a couple in their 20's came in with a large plastic bag of dead fish. Talking a LARGE bag. And alot of fish. Dead fish. I thought maybe they had come to collect any dead fish the store might have had for food for a python or something. Silly me.

Turns out this couple had also bought a 300 gal tank, the best halide lighting, figi rock, etc from another store. When the tank had been filled, they had waited the 6 weeks they were told. They had come to this store to buy the fish because they were doing other shopping nearby. The conversation between them and the manager, who had been of the day before this happened went as follows:

Man: We want to return these fish and get some more.
Woman: We brought a sample of the water. (Holds up plastic container) The water is fine but all the fish died.
Manager: Do you have a saltwater tank or a freshwater tank?
Man: Yes.
Manager: (Confused, this was not a yes or no question) Do you have two tanks?
Woman: No. We have a freshwater and a saltwater tank.
Manager: (Really confused) No? But you have two tanks, right? A freshwater and a saltwater tank? (Opens bag.) These are freshwater and saltwater fish.
Woman: (A little angry she isnt being understood.) No! We have a freshwater and saltwater tank! We bought freshwater and saltwater fish! Here's a sample of our water! The fish you sold us died. I want to exchange these for live ones!
Manager: Do you have water from the other tank so I can check the quality of it too before we sell you any more!
Man: (Really angry, shouting) We dont have another tank! We have a freshwater and saltwater tank!!!!! Now sell us some more fish!!!!
Manager: (Horror creeping over his face, and ours, as we all slowly begin to understand) You have....one tank...
Man: And we put freshwater and saltwater in it! Now sell me more fish! We paid $300 for these fish and we want some more!

The manager, who had become a personal friend of ours, asked if we would mind leaving and come back another day. He was going to be very busy dealing with these customers for quite some time as he was going to have to talk verrrrrry slooooowwwwly.

Or, even better, kids related to a Reefer, "Mommy, are these Ocellaris or Perculas?"

Ill do you one better- Ive got a regular customer with a kid who is maybe 3 years old, and can pronounce- and properly ID- Vlamingi Tangs (among an astounding number of other fish). This kid knows taxanomic nomenclature better than most kids that age know their own names. Super cool.

he was mad cause we wouldnt refund his fish a while back, i guess he forgot we had cameras;)

I guess never having been in the bustle of an LFS full time, I don't get to see it all or hear it all. I was tired when I wrote the book earlier after hear how people hate this and that. In my experience, it's usually the ones that have a little more knowledge than the average person beause they have been in a hobby or lifestyle for a short while that it seems to bother the most. The ones that have been with it longer don't seem to verbalize their feelings as much. Not saying this is what the case was/ is here, but in other aspects of my life.

I can see where it all can get on ones nerves, but it comes with the job. I try to educate people whenever I can about any subject that I might be familiar with enough to feel right about the education.

I guess we can all get into that mode with different things...Anemone vs anenome, chimney vs chimley, probably vs prolly, and the computer speak, lose vs loose.

If only I had the time to post all the stories.

"Can I boil down my w/c waste water to recapture the salt & reuse it?" I spent about 10 minutes explaining both the inefficiency of this and the fact that the 1/2 the purpose of a w/c is to replenish trace elements that would be missing from the "used" salt. Got a look like I just solidified his opinion that all LFS employees are stupid. Glad a guy with 2 months into his 55 know more than me...

I could go on all day.

The crud from the water will all reconstitute when you add water back to it also. Along with the trace elements all being diminished.

I never worked at a LFS but two of my friends did and they would pull this crank call on the store when they weren't working...

Customer: (Irrate) u guys sold me a fish yesterday and it just bit me and I'm bleeding, what should I do?

Store: Where did it bite you?

Customer: On the (manhood)

crickets chirping...............

Here is the one that drives me nuts personally ...

Cust: I've got a quick question, if you have a second.
Me: Sure, no problem! :D
Cust: Ok so I've got a 75 Allglass reef ready tank, with 2-110w VHO, and 2-250w MH 14 single ended lamps. About 70# mixed fiji and totoka rock, some tonga branch. I have a torch coral, hammer, Colt coral, some orange zoa's with orange skirts and green mouths really nice, A fungia on the sand oh and its caribsea fiji pink, red brain with green stripes, a yellow tang, 2 oceallris clowns, a yellow clown goby, 2 watchman gobies with a pistol shrimp pair, about 20 astrea snails, 10 margarita snails, 2 queen conch, 6 peppermint shrimp, 2 cleaner shrimp, and the system is on a sump using a G-2 skimmer, and a magdrive 500, and there is a 300 watt heater in the sump also.
Me: waiting patiently ... ... ..
Customer: I use reef crystals salt, and B-ionic daily about 20cc, I feed some flake in the morning and some frozen at night, and Cyclops, Phyto, and rotifers for the corals.
Me: still waiting ... No question yet ... ... ... ..
Customer: Do you think that I should feed the tang some seaweed?

All that un-needed info for a feeding question, I know it seems trivial to others but after this happens 5 times a day I get really upset.

Ah. The reason I asked is cause I work down at SW, Inc. Couldn't handle the retail side any more so I went to wholesale. It's much better...
