I thought that we agreed that we were going to drop the argument and get on with the real point of the thread?

Since i'm already typing, i think my initial "how can you sell those fish to someone who is going to kill them" was because of the volume of fish i see compared to that of a fish store.

I've only had 3 salt water fish die under my care...ever. so when a local fish store has loads of fish coming in and going out and dying they get desensitized to it. so selling a fish to someone so they will kill it isn't that big of a deal when the 3 other fish that came in with that one died in QT

Sorry. Didn't mean to upset you...

oh, i didn't mean to sound upset, i'm not at all actually.

i was just trying to say that i can understand how fish stores can get used to fish dying or being killed and not worry about who they are selling fish to anymore.

i know my local fish store cares about the fish and wouldn't sell to someone unfit the care of themselves let alone a fish. and i probably wouldn't go there anymore if they did.

i had this one guy come in and buy a pair of percula clownfish from us. he was quite old and at the time i was just a kid but id been keeping marines for around 3 years by that time. so out of polite conversation i asked how long he had been keeping fish and how big his tank was. "never you mind and ive been keeping fish longer than you have been alive!"...ok.... so i sell the fish to him and i was abit upset to be honest there was no need for him to be that rude to me. anyway he comes back the next day pointing a finger at me saying that i had sold him sick fish. so i gave him two new clownfish as compensation and told him that perhaps he should introduce them more slowly. "i Know what im doing!" he yells at me. comes back the next day with two more dead clownfish and hes furious and wants all his money back. my boss then comes over and asks whats going on because i dont want to deal with this rude man any longer. after a short conversation with the boss, it turns out our "expert" has been trying to keep clownfish with black moor and bubble eye goldfish. duh......

co-worker told me this gem.

lady: hi, i need food for my . . .uh . . gieco

mike (coworker): you mean gecko?

lady: yeah yeah, thats it. no wait its a turtle.
(pause)
lady: no im mean its a frog.

My story is actually a reversal of the the topic of this thread, but I will give it a go.

I went into my LFS and started to look at their coral selection. I noticed that their zoanthids were closed up and had sundial snails that were visible on the colonies. I pointed these out to the lady that worked there. I explained that they are zoanthid predators and that they are affecting the health of the zoanthids. She looked at me like I was crazy and asked if I was serious. I told her I was and she removed one snail and threw it in the sump and smiled at me as though to say,"Sure crazy man, I will get rid of the snail."

A month later, I went into the same place and once again saw a zoanthid rock with sundial snails. This time I told the manager so that they could take the appropriate steps so that they would not lose the zoanthids. I was told it was a turbo snail. If you have seen each of these, they look nothing alike. I tried to emphasize the difference in the two snails, but to no avail. I walked out and vowed to never shop there again.

This is not a knock on every LFS nor on LFS employees. I just cant' understand why they would not at least take a look into this problem instead of just losing rock after rock of zoanthids. Many zoanthid predators are tough to spot and I realize that it would be impossible to catch everything that comes in on each colony, but if I was the manager, I would train my employees to at least pick off the noticeable pests that they see when they walk by the coral tanks. I guess the store and most of their customers are ok with losing rocks of zoanthids after buying them.

It's like the lady at my local petco that had a flameback angel and a maroon clown in a 20-gallon, she said all she needed to do was get a bigger filter and that there would be no problems whatsoever. Or the same lady who told me that their H. Magnifica would be fine under incandescent bulbs (the ones in the cheap freshwater starter kits) as long as you fed the anemone. When I pulled out a book and showed her their lighting requirements she laughed and told me I was such a newbie.

EDIT: Oh, and a guy there tried to sell me a zoa colony with no zoas on it. He said that since it had been labeled as a zoa colony that it was therefore a colony regardless of what was or wasn't on there.

An anemone can live off of low light with valid nutrition. They don't do nearly as well, however they will live. I have kept them that way before.

We have a pretty big problem of kids running around rampant and unattended. It's not just a kid every now and again, but at times 3/4 of the people in the store are kids. It's been so bad that I've actually had a few people come up to me and say "Wow you're store is so great. It's so much closer, cheaper and more convenient than the New Jersy or Baltimore aquarium!" Like it's a sunday outing for them.

But back to the little chiluns, one of my coworkers who also posts in this thread, whenever he notices lot's of them running around, he gets on the intercom and says
"attention customers! All unattended children found running around will be given a pot of coffee and a puppy."*walmart hangup*

Needless to say there is an almost immediate decline in unattended children.

-I know most nems can survive mostly on food, but it should be noted that within the week the nem chucked its symbiotic algae, shriveled up, and died. H. Magnificas are a bit more sensitive than say BTAs or LTAs, although in the wild I'm sure they do fine especially during storms where there can be extended periods of no light.

While I find alot of humor in this thread just remember without these nuts there would be fewer jobs in this business. Also ignorance can be treated unlike stupidity. Try to be the cure.

I have to remind my co-workers (and myself) of something very similar since I'm in fast food. If it weren't for our fat, lazy, & ignorant customers we wouldn't have a job.

Yeah, we get some good looking customers, but the people that eat here 3-4 times a week are the ones that keep us open. They're not so in shape. If people wanted to take the 45 minutes out of their day to make dinner vs spending 35-40 to go pick it up or wait the 45 minutes to have it delivered- no job. If it weren't for the people willing to pay $30+ to feed a family of 3- no job.

This a great hobby. We all start out knowing very little, and have the potential to learn a great deal along the way. And we all get the opportunity to say something goofy at some point.

Here are a couple of my LFS stories (from a customer perspective):

I was looking at a frag tank in a LFS and saw a message written on the glass that read "NO NEED TO ASK ANYONE AT THE COUNTER ABOUT ME. I'M NOT DEAD, I JUST LAY HERE SOMETIMES." There was a line with an arrow pointing to a circle on the glass.

What did I see when I looked through the circle? Some hermit crabs devouring a hippo tang that was laying in a nook in the LR. It looked like it had been there for a while.

I was buying food at another LFS. I needed a powerhead for my RDSB bucket, and thought that my MJ1200 would be too much flow. I was getting paying for the food and there were some other MJ's in the display. I had never had a need for any of hte other MJ's so I didn't know what their maximum flow might be. I asked the LFS worker:
"How many GPH is that MJ900?"
"900." (dead serious).
"No, really... do you know how many GPH it is?"
"I told you, 900."

He got irritated when I asked to see the box, and I ended up not buying it.

A girl called the store i worked at called canyon tropical fish and asked if we sold dog immunization shots. I said no this is an aquarium store and she hung up.

Another time I sold a couple of guppies to a kid. He and his mother come into the store a couple hours later with dead guppies. Turns out petsmart told them they could use activated carbon as a substrate.

Customer walks in saying his leopard shark has red marks on his nose. I ask him how big his tank was. He replies, "50 gallons." UGH.

An elderly woman walks into the store (6 years ago) when I was working with another employ. She comes up too me saying the guppies she bought yesterday died (24 hour warranty on fresh water fish). I go to get her some more. The other employ tells me too stop and tells her he was at the store whole day yesterday and he did not remember her buying any guppies and that she is lying. He than asks her who helped her get the guippies. She tells him the asian guy (owner). Little did she know the owner took the day off the day she claimed to have bought the guppies. The excuses she gave were priceless and she suddenly remembered that she purchased them 2 weeks ago. What people will do to save a buck.

I had had some one come into the store
Do you guys have bleach here?
No why on earth do you want that for your tank?!
To clean it, what the hell else would i use it for?
Maybe cleaning your shower, but never your tank!
Is that why my fish died? from putting bleach in the water?
Yes ... thats why ...............
Damn it, they told me all i needed was a filter to get it out of the water! Now i got to go home and put some muriatic acid in it to clean that up.
No sir ... oh .. never mind, good luck.

I still have no idea what the hell he was trying to do, clean his tank or make a bomb.

Puffy Da Dog says, he used to maintain pools, bleach is basically clorine and muratic acid are like PH up and PH down except in a pool and not in a tank if that makes sense...

This one is my favorite phone call, and it just happened yesterday!

Caller: Uh, yeah hi, do you have any tadpoles?

Me: No sir, I'm sorry, we only carry marine animals, all saltwater here.

Caller: Oh.... well, do you have any saltwater tadpoles?

I didn't know what to say, all I could muster was: No.

You should have told him you don't have tadpoles, but you have frogfish. ;)
