"I have a story...Not form a LFS but along the same lines. I live in Vancouver, Canada, so right at the pacific but a bit cooler than tropic waters! I called a guy about some livestock he had on craigslist...

Me:Hey I was wondering if you still have the clowns or tangs, maybe some corals?
Him: Oh no sorry, they are all gone.
Me: Oh man too bad...
Him: It really is too bad, I would have given them to you for nothing, I ended up just returning them to the ocean so I could get rid of the equipment.
Me: What? Like OUR ocean???
Him: Yeah just down at the beach...

It went on a bit more...basically me trying to figure out how he could be so stupid! Apparently he thought the fish, LR, corals, ect. were all from local waters...Poor fish and corals. Froze to death."




its those kinds of idiots who screw up local environments, nobody should ever "return" any thing to the ocean!
 
Amazing. I guess it would be hard to make this stuff up. I think what makes someone stupid is not that they are ignorant. It's that they refuse to acknowledge that they don't know anything and won't be educated.

A local fish store in SF tags their clown fish as "NEMO" ....And they also have some sort of light that flashes NEMO for sale lol

That's great marketing. There's nothing idiotic about it. Think of how much traffic that brings to the store when a kid reads "Nemo" on the sign. If that gets 1/10th of the families that walk through just to see the fish into this wonderful hobby then it is a job well done.

On a side note, it is a cliche to constantly complain about "Nemo" and "Dory." This is a wonderful thread, but it seems like every 4th post is someone complaining about a fish being called a different name.
 
Yes, i understand what tour saying Kmf507. But also it will also bring in alot of people that know nothing and arent willing to go do some research. And put NEMO and DORY into a fish bowl with some tap water. But if they are willing to actually care for Nemo and dory properly with the correct equipment than that is fine they can go buy a nemo and care for it and have a wonderful pet.
 
Something needs to bring in people who don't know anything about the hobby, that's how the hobby grows. At one point or another, all of us knew nothing. Someone who walks in because their kid wants to see "Nemo" is no less likely to do research than anyone else. No matter how you get to the hobby, you are either a person who wants to treat animals with respect (and does research) or you aren't.
 
Yes, but alot times parents will buy a nemo just because lil johnny wants one and what lil johnny wants lil johnny gets. And they just bring it home and put into a fish bowl. And then call the fish store and complain that nemo died. But then there are some parents that will do research before they get thier kid a fish and find out if they want to go through the hassel or not. I know excatley what you are saying. That when people buy a fish they want to learn more a bout it and how to take care of it and then there is one more person in this wonderfull hobby. And then thier are some people that just dont care if the fish dies and they will go buy another one or make up an excuse to tell li johnny that nemo went back to the ocean.
 
I spent 2 hours up to my armpits in a 600 gallon live rock vat. All because this lady wanted to pick just the right color rocks that matched her newly painted livingroom. :rolleyes:
 
When I went hunting for a coral beauty I found one in a shopping center with a tall tank. The workers spent half a hour trying to catch it because they would not take out the rocks >.>
 
A few of my friends went fishing a years back in Hawaii (i was here as well - we all went to college and they were on exchange)
They caught an octopus about the size of a softball when balled up and wanted to keep it. they called me (apparently im an octopus expert..lol) And asked me what they needed to keep it. I said well
"you need a tank, filters to start. How big is it?"

"size of a softball"

"you should probably leave it in the ocean - it will climb out or die pretty fast in a small tank"

"Naw, we are going to keep it. "

so after fighting with them for a good hour on the subject, i decided if they are going to keep it i should atleast make sure they get the right equipment. So i bring them around to a few LFS in honolulu. He buys a tank, and a HOB filter and says OK, lets go. I said WHOA! you need more then that. skimmer etc. Thats to much money, lets just leave...

I sigh.... regreting helping them as i know this thing is going to die.

We go back to the dormroom and set the tank up. He goes to the ocean, get some sand and water brings it back and throws the octopus in. (it was sitting in a cooler for over 5 hours prior to this)

I was so sure it would have died that night... but low and behold the thing lived for 2 months in a 20 gallon tank with 1 HOB filter and no water changes... Ate everything you threw in the tank!! I eventually released it because they were leaving and the poor thing was cramped.

Im still amazed it lived for any length of time past a day...
 
i was overhearing a story in my lfs... there was this guy who bought a lion... 40 bucks ok.. they tell him to go to walmart or petco to buy feeder fish..he buys 15 dollars worth that were 10 cents each... he throws them all into the tank.. the lion eats 3 and the guy was complaining how they told him to buy feeder fish for tHe lion
 
A guy I've never met but apparently is a regular at my store recently asked one of my coworkers to get him a damsel. She must have been the first to ask him if he actually had a saltwater tank and he responded with "No.. these are saltwater? No wonder all of my fish have been dying." Mind you, all of the tanks are clearly labeled with big signs that say "Saltwater".
