Gimme a break, caveat emptor. It's not like the customer was misled or deceived in any way. You can't expect people to interview everybody they sell something to.

This is exactly what I'm talking about. How can you make a recommendation to someone with out a basic idea of what their system is all about.

yeah you can, they are animals, not toys

I think your heart is in the right place and i wish every LFS employee would interview any person they hadn't seen before so things like this don't happen but that would be like a car salesman making sure you know that you are suppose to put gas in it and change the oil from time to time

It's not like you have to ask that many questions. It's like that game guess who. With just a few questions you can figure out some good recommendations and help to make that customer one who's going to trust and respect your opinions through his own observable success.

whats worse, sounding like a cautious butthead to 1 person or having a $40 dollar animal die who has just been taken from his native home

The man said he had a 300 gallon tank! How much farther down this line of questioning do you think it should have gone? I think most LFS employees would have stopped right there and thought "Wow, this guy must know what he's doing" and bagged the fish. Sheesh

Wow, he obviously doesn't...you should know by now after reading this thread how important it is to ASK QUESTIONS. anybody can set up a 300 gallon freshwater tank. come on. really?

reading this thread? I started this thread! And he did ask questions and stopped when he got an answer that led him to believe the customer was knowledgeable......and yes anybody CAN set up a 300 gallon freshwater tank........heck i got 12 of them set up right now.....but not many people drop that kind of money on a tank and not know the difference between a saltwater and a freshwater fish.........the employee was not at fault in this instance

Anyways........back to the stories!!!

yeah...more stories.

I worked in customer service in most of my jobs and no matter what the job was, all people act the same.
You do begin to wonder about people and how they think. Can they really be that dumb? It is as if they don't stop and think about their questions before they ask it.
Yep! It is enough to make customer service workers die a young death.
Been there, done that! No more!

Silly example:
Two employees in a store, just after opening. Cashier stocking items near by the register. Customer asking if there is anyone working the register today. NOPE! Today, everything is FREE! Have a nice day and come back and see us!
Grrrrrr.

Exactly. Maika'i you're wrong, get over it.

I think its strange to imply that because newbie customers are ignorant about the basics of the hobby its perfectly acceptable for LFS employees to be ignorant as well...

Just ask 1 question....

What Is Your S.G.?

If they give you a blank or dumb look Don't sell it to them until you find out more.

I completely agree, You Guys And Gals are the Professionals not the customers, It is your responsibility to try and ensure that their aquarium can support the species they are wanting to purchase. Just ask a few simple questions like What size of aquarium do you have?, How Long has it been set up?, What is your S.G.? (That can tell alot about a customer) What is your lighting? If you know the customer knows what they are doing sell it to them if not ask questions. I know it can be very difficult especially when you are getting slammed but if a newbie gets discouraged and throws in the towel that can have a huge impact on the hobby say just as an example say every LFS employee looses only 1 potential aquarist in their career (this is just an estimate as I will not even attempt to get actual figures nor do I have the resources to obtain them) (I went to Yellow pages .com ant typed up Pet supplies and there was on avg. 21 listings per page in the USA and 30691 pages now say 1/4 of them sells fish)
30691 Pages Times 21 Listings per page Divided by 4 Equals 161128 Fish stores
Now say the avg. Fish store has 7 employees and every one losses 1 newbie on avg. in their careers that could become a huge impact on the industry as we just lost 1,127,896 aquarists in the USA. That makes me wonder how many world wide?
Now again these figures are only an example and no where near accurate and at best a poor estimate and only are intended as a example to show what type of impact LFS employees could have in the hobby. Just remember it almost always starts with you the LFS employees.

no need to cry about it

I can't believe we're still talking about this........

Of course we try to help all noobs as best we can........I guess the only critizism is he assumed someone with a 300 gallon tank WASN'T a noob......which i think is a perfectly acceptable assumption........but i'm willing to admit that is wrong if it will get the thread back on topic

I still say the one about throwing flake food in the live rock has to be about the best..... I just can not get over that... Classic..... LMAO

i had someone ask me if they had to buy a larger shell for their tortoise when it got older...

a lady screamed at me for feeding a tiny dog to a ball python (it was a white mouse)...

one guy peed in his tank to get the cycle going...

I also had one guy go on HERE and complain about me and my LFS after i refused to sell him an adult snowflake eel the day after had bought a juvi blue tang and 2 baby percs (for the same tank)...

one person just stared at me when i told that YES, you need to FEED your fish

countless get ****ed when i refuse to sell them nemo because he wont live in a fish bowl...

Beat those i dare you guys (ps- im from chicago)
