I just browsed liveaquaria and they have two SMALL Black Tangs available for 469 a piece - one is 1.75 inches and the other is 2.25 inches

Are they supposed to be rare or something?
they are fairly rare. Even more rare when they are small. Most are larger.

So um whos going to buy it?? 500bucks is way to expensive for a fish!
I'm not, i don't have the money or the right size tank.
If you think thats expensive you should see the cost for a Gem Tang - they are around 3400ish depending on size

Thousands! Well not in the U.S but overseas in Africa. To support an orphan it cost 30bucks a month. So um thats about 113 people that you can support using that money someone would use on a gem tang.

Funny, I keep seeing black tangs on various sites. I'm wondering if they are becoming more common or if I'm just noticing them more. My LFS just had a small one as well.
EDIT: Ok - just to clarify - maybe I'm in a state of denial as presumably if more show up, prices would go down. Then, I could justify getting one.

Your not alone.. recently in the past few months i've been seeing atleast two a month and they are small ones. More then i've seen all year...
I've always wanted one. My problem has been finding one that is the right size. The little ones usually come in very skinny. Most of the rest I see are huge. A fat 3-4" specimen has been hard to come by. A few years back black tangs were much easier to get and a lot less expensive - maybe $300 or so. I read somewhere that Christmas Island is getting fished out for black tangs. The rest of the Line Islands still have better populations, but fewer collectors.
