Chloramines are a combination of chlorine and ammonia - typically added at the water treatment plant in instances where they have long runs of water pipe - so long that near the end of the pipe the chlorine have almost entirely come out of solution.
With chloramines, contact time with carbon is important. So to be safe, we recommend two carbon stages (note that this is one of the few situations where we do - in most other cases the double carbon stages are redundant/not needed.
The carbon will split the chloramines back into ammonia and chlorine. The carbon will adsorb the chlorine, but the ammonia goes on through the carbon, through the RO membrane, and is caught by the DI resin.
So be prepared for shorter life spans on your DI resin. We have a special DI resin mix designed for system with chloramines.
