Aussie Archohelia rediviva

Thanks ninja...my heavy feeding schedule is the only reason I think I'm seeing the health of this coral improve as quickly as it has. It was definitely in terrible shape when I received it.

This is a great thread!
I am very impressed with your success, congrats!

I can't wait to get some of this for my tank!... someday.... lol

Here is a good article on Archohelia Rediviva if you haven't already read it

Nice to see a fellow Archohelia owner. :) I purchased one of the first Archohelia colonies from liveaquaria several months ago. I wrote an article about it in Reef Hobbyist Magazine. You may want to check the article for my experience with this coral. It's a great piece, but requires a lot of work. Most importantly, feed often and keep it out of bright light.

The author all ready posted it, but thanks :)

Update:

Well I said I'd report the good with the bad, and unfortunately I have some very bad news to report to those of you that have followed this thread.

Over this past weekend my rediviva was "knocked" off of the rock I had it attached to by *something*. Unfortunately this happened at night after lights out. It had to be something big and strong cause I had attached my rediviva frag with super glue gel. I'm thinking my skittish Foxface may have slamed into it, but I don't know for sure.

Unfortunately the frag fell onto the WORST possible coral it could have made contact with in my system. It fell into my Acanthastrea echinata! When the lights came on I saw this hellish mass of mesenterial filaments at the center of my Acan, and I didnt know what it was at first, and it startled me cause I'm not used to seeing my Acan look like that.

I then glanced up at my rediviva and noticed it was gone! My heart jumped into my throat when I put 2 and 2 together and I realized that hellish mass was my rediviva!!! I plunged my hand into the tank, and sure enough I pulled my battered rediviva frag out of my Acan colony.:mad2:

I blew it off in my powerhead, but it was too little too late. I reattached it with super glue gel, and put it back on the rockwork. I continued to use a turkey baster to clean the coral off.

The damage done was pretty severe. All of the coenosarc (including all the new growth) was "burned" off. All of the polyps were "melted', and the only living tissue is at the very deep center of the polyps.

The "melted" polyps cannot expand to feed, so I'm assuming the living tissue at the center of the polyps will continue to fade because they cannot catch food.

I'm so pist off at myself for failing with this coral (because it is so rare in the hobby). Especially after all the hard work I put into the recovery effort. It was really looking good, and the coenosarc on the coral was almost fully intact (thin in a few spots), but much better then when I got it. It showed great promise. For this to happen was a huge kick in the balls.:sad1: I'm really depressed to have it end this way cause I was having so much success with rehabilitating it.

Here are current pics (probably the last) of what is left of my rediviva frag:

That really sucks. Keep trying though... you might be able to bring it back. I have a small frag that is in a similar condition to that one. It refuses to die and ti's been like that for a few months...

I agree, Do not give up, it should grow some polyps backs, keep feeding.

Maybe you should move it to another area of tank in order to prevent another fall.

Best of luck! I feel you pain,
this hobby has also brought me the share of frustrating emotions.

Thank you Kreeger, stunreefer, Eight, and San Juan for the pity party/well wishes.....I appreciate it! Anyone who has been in this hobby long enough has had his/her fair share of problems/dissapoinment....it won't be the first and it won't be the last.

I'm just upset cause I took a (rare) coral that was in pretty bad shape and was able to get it to turn around with alot of attention and care...only to have everything turn to s**t cause of a glue bond breaking.

I have a quetion for you guys who say not to give up on it (and I won't untill every last polyp is completely dead). How can the polyps feed when they don't have tentacles to feed with? They were "burned" off.

I've been spraying the frag with Reef Nutrition Oyster Feast 3 times a day just in case it can grasp/suck up something. These corals need many feedings to sustain themselves when healthy...nevermind in this state.

I'm just worried that the polyps don't have the feeding tentacles to grasp the food that they will need to sustain themselves, and that the remaing living tissue will just waste away.

There will have to bee at least a couple tentacles left in a polyp (or more) in order for it to really feed. If the mouth is still intact I suppose it could intake some nutrition but the tentacles are really like their hands bringin food to their mouth.

You might try the tupperware trick and just douse the hell out of it with food for a couple hours.

That is such a bummer... I hope that there is enough of it left to feed and you can bring it back (again).

Breaking News!

I finally got my 4 (Yes 4) Archohelia Rediviva (small colonies) I think the largest is 3" and smallest is 2.5. But one may be gone because it arrived with NO WATER :(((

I just got done acclimation and moving them... 2 for the frag tank and 2 for the display tank.

I'll take some pictures when my lights go on in a couple of hours :)

rowjimmy, I hate that you had this happen to you, I bought a frag after reading and following this thread. Yes, I paid alot of money for the frag, but after following this thread my frag is doing well, I really feel your pain right now, I can't believe someone would brag on your thread about their new purchase after your loss.
