It's really an old fad it started out with Paul Hogan and Crocodile Dundee in the 1980s and has continually manifested itself through the years in one form or another (Mad Max, Outback Steakhouse, Foster's Beer, and The Crocodile Hunter).
Seriously, Australia has just started exporting corals for the first time ever. Thus far only LPS coral have been imported.

And yeah, they just started importing corals, and since no one brags about the crappy brown corals you just paid a boat load of money for they only show off the nice ones, so we see that as the "norm"
