aussie echinata care or placement

They require intense light ( I have mine under a 400w 12k MH)and good random flow.

They are slow growers and very fragile so be patient.

the ones Ive had seem to do well in moderate to high light in medium random flow....
 
I'm starting mine on the floor, with moderate water flow. Honestly, when was the last time you killed a new acro from low light? ;)
 
I have a piece on the frag rack under high light and flow and it seems very happy,great PE and color.Its from a wild piece that is living under high light also.Doesn't seem to be light shy IMO
 
Are perople having better luck with frags versus colonies of this? I am considering picking up a nice colony, but, would rather a frag if the survival rate is better...

I have mine up fairly high in decent flow.

Dave i have two frags that have been doing great for a while now.

I guess I should have asked... were you asking about final placement, or starting off your new colony? IMO, a non colored up coral that just got imported from oz probably isn't going to be used to instense light on day 1, hence my previous answer.

But after acclimation, I plan to put mine high up.

Just got a frag of one finally. I am going to treat it like a turkari(Hawkins) so med light and high flow. I think the flow will be the key to keeping the same shape as it's wild counterpart. Very neat looking coral IMO.

Dave - I would say the frags are doing better than the colonies. You will notice a lot of the people that posted when they first got their colonies are not posting about them now- I wonder why. I know someone who I consider a good reefer that has been through a few colonies - she said they tend to fade away. Im not saying it cant be done, but they are still poor shippers and fragile corals regardless of their origin. It would be nice to see the people who have had theirs for over 6 month chime in along with a pic...

I just picked up a frag at a local swap (I believe it is the Icefire) and it seems to be doing extremely well. I had it up high at first, but the colors faded except for the blue tips. It is now on the bottom and looks beautiful. HTH.

Here's a little chronicle of mine now that it has finally begun active growth. In my experience this coral sits dormant for a loooong time before growing, but once it starts growth is just above moderate.
when i first got it in january , not very pretty

this is about a month later under the hot spot of a lumen max elite with 14k ushio 250w

fast forward a couple months, tank matured, lower nutrients, same light

and now in the last 6 weeks, changed to lumenarc to get better spread, no more hot spot so lost a bit of the color but now i've gotten 3/4" growth this month

Wow, nice PE!! Mine is still looking all closed and "tight"... hoping to see some PE soon :-/
