Australian SPS

I have seen these are now coming in to the US. I have also heard they are not Aussie, but out of Papua New Guinea. Anyone know where these are collected?

Here's the one I got yesterday:

Here is the other 'Aussie SPS' I got yesterday, it's the long thin (out of focus) purple with white polyps one on the right. Kinda looks like an A. Horrida varient.

Not sure about authenticity of location, but I would imagine (hope) that if you buy from a reputable shop that is behind sustainable collection practices, you should be covered. I know that Kevin Cohen and LA are pretty responsible in this regard, and they have had some sweet aussie pieces recently, like the red/green monti below.

I got this from Kevin, I beieve it's one of the Aussies they got in some time ago. LA named it the Northwoods Pink Lemonade.

Gorgeous! Id have to call that a beautiful echinata...hope it holds it color..:bounce3:

It is a nice ehchinata . I wouldn't fuss too much over where it came from unless they were jacking up the price ; using Aussie as a location to do so.

I don't care where it came from. The issues is using the 'Aussie' tag to up the price. It was sold by the wholesaler as Australian and therefore sold by my LFS as such. My question is, are these corals from Autralia or not? Not that it matters, it would just be nice to know the truth. I hear rumblings that they are out of PNG, so why not say so? PNG just opened up and I see no shame If this not an 'Aussie' collected coral.

Aussie always goes for more around here. I assume it is the same everywhere? Interesting a LFS is selling as Aussie just to up he price....some shady things happen in this hobby.

I'm not bashing the LFS; please note the LFS bought it as Auatralian, why wouldn't they sell it as that?

I just heard a buzz that these are not Australian, I was just wondering if there is a left coaster out there that has the scoop from the wholesalers in LA.

i know i direct importer from Austrailia (with all the permits) ... he says that there are some really sick SPS coming in from there right now ... with that said, i cant say it is "Aussie" but it sure is sick.

See here the LFS usually brings in the corals themselves...no middleman.

FWIW, PNG is the last of the coral triangle that hasn't been tapped for coral. Be weary of high prices coming from that area as it is only going to be a marketing scam. BUT PNG's corals are probably the best, as the farmers practise sustainable farming methods

With all due respect, there is more of an issue than using Aussie to jack up the price. The reason Aussie corals are expensive is because Australia heavily regulates collection practices to ensure the reefs are not harmed and collection practices are sustainable. Spending more on Aussie corals is the responsible thing to do as a hobbyist, and if LFSs are mislabeling corals there is more than just money at stake. Aussies are the only wild colonies I'll purchase, otherwise I just obtain corals by fragging. Just my two cents.

Gorgeous colony Leishman!! Nice score! :eek1:These Echinatas are really coming in. My LFS had one, very similar to yours, but I declined because it was too much$$ and I was worried that being as large as it was that it would not do well in my system. They said is was an Aussie. I opted to get a frag from UniqueCorals instead at MACNA. They obtained a very similar colony also Australia.

I personally have not heard these colonies coming from PNG. All I know is that some of the very best and most colorful wild stuff seems to be from down under. Who knows... but you got yourself a beautiful piece. In my opinion, few acros come close to the delicate and beautiful intricacy of a true Echinata. I wish you luck with it. :p
