does anyone mind explaining the steps used to make a picture small enough to use as your avatar usifg photoshop? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

It can really be a pain in the rear due to the size restriction.

Crop to 150x100 pixels and save as a GIF file. You have options to reduce the amounts of colors and such to lower the file size. do some trial and error to get the image good enough quality and small enough for the upload.

This is one time where Save For Web really shines. Using that dialog, set the file type to jpg, new size to 150x150 and use the compression slider / input to nail down the exact amount of compression to achieve a just under 8k image size. If you include IPTC info you'll have a hard time getting under 8k with a recognizable image.
