Average RBTA pricing

I'm considering buying one if i can afford it for my nano but im curious as to the average pricing for them. so far ive seen them in the hundreds rage and im definately not looking to spend that much. How much have you guys paid and where's a good quality place thats affordable? if i cant find them cheap ill probably just go with GBTA that has good color. thanks

it ALL depends on the store...
i've seen them 100$ for 3 in. anems. that weren't even all that red. I've also seen one in the store i was @ today for a great deal. A rose that's like 2 ft. and very healthy pretty deep red for a deal cos the owner likez me. 140$. the same store had a 4-5" rose that was VERY VERY red for 60$. It depends on the store, how good negotiator you are (^_^) the size and the time especially. RBTA's were cheap at one point until they were over-fished. I also saw various other roses at mostly expensive prices. I wouldn't order online, as you can't see the exact hue of them. I prefer corals and anemones from the lfs as i can review them, their health, etc.

but wait... how big is your nano?
Me - along with a few other members here (as i'm sure they'll back me up on this one) - are strongly against large growing nems in small tanks etc. BTA's get up to 2ft long, and make sure you've done your research. Also, as anemones are extremely difficult to care for, even in well, aged tanks, you definitely SHOULDNT get any anemone in a new tank. Have you cycled the nano? how long have you had it? what are your specs? If everything is deemed good, you may want to go with a pink tip haitian, rock anemone, aiptasia etc. But not a large, more difficult anemone... It only hurts you and the animals in the longrun.

yeah im looking for a small one that 4-5in sounds good to me. I'd like to buy some but the LFS around here suck big time. I'll probably just save up and going on a shopping spree in San Fran or something. There's only one decent store that has good coral here, and the selection is very limited.

oh im sorry im just planning ahead i wont be ready for at least six months to a year for one, im just doing research now. my tank is just barely finishing cycling. so yeah im just doing research.

As for my nano its a 24g jbj nano dx it has a sapphire nano skimmer, the pump is 266 gph, i have foam filter, carbon and soon i'll get some phosban. as for lighting i have 36watt pc's with 10k day and 7100k actinic blue.

okay thanks, just as a future reference, (and gj on the researching) you may want to invest in a refugium. they are very beneficial, help you keep nitrate etc down, and phosphate, and help fight pH swings. You still may want to be careful with a 24. Hopefully you can get a BTA that splits a lot to sell or give away to the LFS and other people (ill take freebies). Good luck with your nano.

Ps: i'd wait a year b4 getting anemones.

the lights should be ok, many people will say "OH YOU MUST HAVE MH! etc." but in reality, Pc is the same as T5, just bigger bulbs, and mh is unecessary especially for a nano. I myself keep both a BTa dn sebae, which i'm in process of rescuing, i bought the sebae bleached and dyed, and the BTA from another reefer here. the size MAY be an issue, but if all else fails, you can always force it to split. I wouldn't recommend one in that small of a tank, but that's just me. you may want to put it in your 80 that you talked about. Just upgrade all your fixtures, spend 1000s on equipment and water, and you're done.

yeah thought about it. its definately not a reef tank i definately dont want to spend 1000's on it lol. i say not a reef tank since its a 80g tall. im turning it into a FW tropical semi-aggressive/aggressive tank. thanks for your help and advice

amaya what do you mean by no?

and mrx, gl to your nano, i'd recommend getting some purrty corals as they don't really contribute to your bio-load.
LPS corals i like:
frogspawn, torch, frogspawn, open brain, frogspawn, lobo brain, frogspawn, elegance (meh...), frogspawn.
Soft corals:
Xenia, colt coral
Polyp Colonies:
Zoos (anything you like, but i dun like the poisonous ones, as i get cuts sometimes and i prefer not to die...)
STAR POLYPS!!! metallic colors only ofcourse

enjoy your reeftank and remember its all up to you =)
not us

Clarification: PC and T5-HO are not the same. They're not even close. T5's use less energy, and while they are technically the same diameter as PCs the fact that they're straight and not doubled up allows for MUCH more efficient reflectors, which results in a ton more light in your tank at lower wattages. In fact, T5's can put out more light at less wattages than Halides, with good individual reflectors of course.

Now that I'm down off that soapbox, I would personally not put a BTA in a 24, but I'm sure that as soon as I submit this 15 people are gonna come in here and yell at me for being mean and tell you all about how they've been keeping a BTA in their 10 gallon tanks for a whole two weeks and everything's just peachy.

I wouldn't. You can, but it may not go well. There's a lot of other cool stuff you can get that would be more suitable for your tank than an anemone.

lol lights depends on the individual tank, but ur right slakker, and that reminds me of that thread w/ brandon... LOL. and ur not mean...:D

Clowns will host in a bunch of things. You might want to check out frogspawn. No matter what you offer them, it's not guaranteed that they will though, even an anemone.

yeah, i like the green torch's though. maybe i'll buy a small green bta and just sell it back to the LFS later

I think the lighting is lacking.

I have seen some that were a size of a nickel for $99.99.....I bought one that was about 4-5" disc size and I paid $60.....have one now that is about 10" disc size that I paid about $70 for.

Clowns hosting frogspawns/Torches are stressing the coral. I will be placing a 12in Anenome in a 30gal cube in about a month, but the tank is setup for an anenome and clowns. If you have some experience under your belt in the hobby, BTA is an easy anenome to care for and will benefit from the hosting of your clowns, but your lighting is a little weak
