Babies on the way

After 29 days my Banggai has started to release his second batch of young :) So far there are three babies out and I can't wait to see how many more are to come tomorrow! Hopefully with a batch under my belt I will be able to get a better survival rate this time.

The remaining 8 out of 20 from the first batch are 49 days old and haven't had a loss in a good while. They are big enough that I think I will start skipping feedings to try and encourage them to take some frozen brine instead of the live...

Congrats on the 2nd batch. Are you going to separate the dad from wifey so he gets a breather and to fatten up before carrying again? I've heard too fast breeding can cause starvation and even death if not given a breather in between.

So he released the rest last night and they are now all safe and separated :) Haven't been able to get a firm count yet, but it's more than last time! It's looking like somewhere between 28 and 35 on day one I think...

Yes, I have read that it is best to ensure that he gets about a week of recovery in order to maintain long term health. After the first batch they waited ten days before starting again, which was plenty of time for him to fatten up. Since they took a nice break on their own last time I am not separating them to see if they will repeat that. If they don't wait long this time then next time I will separate him to make sure he has time to recover. I also took a tip from someone and for the last week or so (starting around day 20 of the father holding) I fed the female less than usual, so that in theory she won't be ready right away and will also use that recovery week to fatten up and then they will both be ready to mate again.

Great thread, I confirmed tonight my pajama cardinal has a mouthful of caviar. It will be interesting to watch.

Unfortunately not at the moment. I had some other stuff come up and haven't tried to raise the last two hatches. They should breed again within the week, but it will be at least three months after that for the young to grow to a decent size. You may ask Miracles38 (Kim) of she has any currently?
