Baby GBTA Nem, to feed first night or not.

Hey guys,

I've got a quick question for the experts here. I picked up a baby GBTA, between the size of a quarter and fifty cent piece, and am wondering if I should try and feed it tonight already or wait a day and try.

It acclimated well, mouth closed, bubbles on tips, color is good. The only problem I saw was it's foot may be a little torn. There was something stringy coming from it, but otherwise looks great. It took to the rock I put it on within a minute and has not let go, and it's been in the tank for about 4 hours now.

So, ya or nay, should I try and feed it a mysis brine mix tonight or not.

BTW - This came from another reefer who's GBTA cloned.

Thanks,

Scott

Sure hope the foot isn't torn, that's a biggie.
As for feeding, I wouldn't even sweat it few days to a week.

Well,

After reading Gold Stripes post, I went ahead and gave it about 2 shrimp. It didn't grab the first one, however the second was caught and devoured in minutes. I'll take it as a good sign that it's willing to eat already. I'll leave it along for a few days before I offer any again.

As for the foot, if it was torn, is there a way to tell if it's going to be a problem or not?

Or if there is a good thread, I'm all about reading up on it.

Thanks,

Scott

ok....did some searching on torn foot, and it all seems like it's survivable, with the moral of the story, dont mess with it, let it heal. I'll do just that, feed a little every few days, and hope for the best. So far all indicators are good though. I killed the lights early to keep a short photo period today, and we'll see how he's doing tomorrow.

Just a little update,

My baby GBTA to looking better and better everyday. I've fed it a single mysis shrimp twice now and it gobbles it down immediately. His foot is looking good, and it appears like it's almost reaching up for more light. The "stalk" seems to be longer, like it's trying to get more. Other than that, color good, mouth tight, still bubbled. The funny thing is I see his bubbles disappear when he feeds, 10 minutes later they are back.

I would feed it a little more often until the foot is healed. It could use the extra energy to heal itself.

Glad to hear it is doing well. The no bubble while eating is normal as far as I know. Mine lost its bubbles after I saved it from the bleached state in which I received it.

Every other day is okay, but every day wouldn't hurt as long as it is not regurgitating the food. Maybe just feed daily but use half the amount if you think you are feeding appropriate sized food now. I would try daily first with the same amount, but that is just me. Personally I love feeding my anemone.

Here's a quick pic of my baby nem. I also included a pic of the used 180G that I'm getting ready so that it'll have a new home when he gets larger. It's 20 years old, and the stand needed more than a little revamping. I still have the varnish the doors, and although I didn't get the color to match the tank, I'm happy with it. Can't wait to get it finished up and online.

Scott,

First off, nice looking GBTA. As a fellow owner of BTAs (I have rose), I can tell you that with quality water and adequate light, a torn foot of a bubble tip isn't a problem. In fact, I've literly ripped some of my rose bubbles in half and both pieces survive just fine and then I have TWO :)

As far as feeding, I wouldn't have fed it the first night as it was still acclimating to your tank, but if it continues to eat, then feed it....it certainly can't hurt....and if it's reaching up towards the light, then its probably not getting enough light and you should move it higher in the tank. If you've got MH on your tank, then it's probably fine regardless of the depth of your tank (unless it's some crazy tall tank). If not, then probably a higher position would help.

Just watch how the nem reacts...a happy anemeone is generally a happy tank, least from my little experience.

Thanks for the info. I was correct, and my little nem has started climbing. He's settled into the top of his rock, and he can go higher if he wants, but I'm hoping he'll stay put now. He's under what was sold to me as a 175w single ended pendant. Come to find out it's got 175w bulbs in it, but the ballasts are only 150w. Light output is ok, but not good enough for the DT so I banished them to the frag tank. Once I get LED's built for it, I plan on selling the MH's, and then he'll already be acclimated to the LED's when he's ready to move to the DT. Anyway, long story short, light output on the halides is ok at best, but I was still surprised it needs more light as my frag tank is a 20g long, and he's about 1/2 way up in the water column.

OK guys,

I appears that my lights suck even more than I realized. My nem has clilmbed to the top of my rock work, so I'm assuming it still wanting more light. I've got some spare LED's, 12 to be exact, and was thinking of putting them together to run over my frag tank which is where the GBTA is living for now. Does color temp of your light effect growth or health of the nem? The reason I ask is I have 10 6500k LED's, and 2 Royal Blues, so it's going to be a very yellowish light. These are all Cree XR-E Q5 LED's.

Please let me know if you think this will work or not.

Other than that, nem still looks good, eating well, and foot looks to be in good shape.

Thanks,

Scott
