Back after 7 months

OK reworked the light and put a thin dark plastic bag around the container ( not over it ) . As for the rots, the water is green and the rots are hard to see (s-strain), and my eyes are getting worse with age ...LOL It looks about right. The fry don't really swim, they dart about 1" at a time. As they move around.

You may want to double up on the plastic bag so the light doesn't get through. Going by the amount of rots and phyto I need to keep my fry going you don't have even close to enough phyto. Maybe rots is ok in that small larvae tank.. Just a thought.

only to notice the fry all pointing to the outer edge of the container instead of swiming around.

You need to add more green water to the fry tank, they will unstick from the walls almost immediately.

That's my problem, not enough phyto ! All attempts to get more have failed. Even trying to get culture disk have been relayed. FAF will be shipping two culture disks on Monday. Won't really help these guys out, but maybe the next batch of fey will have a better chance.

rkelman, doubling up on the plastic. Thanks !

MarinaP, The LFS I go said he has some better stuff called Phyto2 that I should try instead of DT's. I'm going to try to get out there today. He's about 30 miles away in LA traffic. :(

Is it even live culture? I did not see much info on the website.

I would stick with nanno. ISO crashed my s-strain completely.

I do not normally use live phyto, FAF disks work well, just remember to dilute it with salt water, not fresh.

Not necessarily. You need it for the fry tank as well. Rots need to feed constantly. Tint water in the fry tank green, just enough for the fry to unstick from the walls. Rots will consume nanno and water will turn lighter in color. Don't let it go clear.

Some people only use live cultures, but nanno paste is much, much cheaper and takes less time to deal with. I will probably use live for very delicate fry, such as chrysopterus, chrysogasters, caps. Or in case of emergency.

Thanks ! I have the fry tank covered with black plastic and black construction paper. So no light is getting in from the sides. I have a night light plugged in above the tank to the right a little bit. Fry seem to be away from the sides. Will update when I get home from work tonight.

Good work agsansoo. In LA there must be someone closer than 30 miles away with phyto... But if you have nano paste go use it! Local reef groups or something may help.. Post a request on RC in the appropriate forum maybe.

Where do you guys get your rotifer from ? Reed Mariculture messed up my order ... :(

I just ordered some from Reed a couple of weeks ago, and didn't have any problems. I have also ordered from Florida Aqua Farms...their prices are a bit better, but not particularly friendly or communicative re: shipping.

I use Instant Algae from Reed Mariculture and love it! I'll never have to hassle with live phyto again. My rotifer cultures are doing great.

I arrived home from work to find all were dead, but four. Well I used the Instant Algae from SeaHorseSource.com and they seem OK. This stuff is much cleaner than the Roti-Diet I used last year, from Reed Mariculture. Also the fry container was crawling with rotifer. So still having trouble keeping these little maroons alive. I think too much light all day yesterday made them too weak.

Well I guess I get another chance. My maroon's have spawned again ! Looks like more eggs then the last time.

I feed the parent twice a day. The female I hand feed extra pieces of chopped Fornula 1 also. The feedings consist of mysis shrimp and Rod's food.

Ok so you are feeding them well. Thats good. I've been told Cyano in the parent tank is really not good for the larvae. I have some in my tank. Perhaps that is why I only have about a 50% survival rate. I'm not sure.

"50% survival rate" Is more than I'm getting ! :(

How often do harvest your rotifer cultures ? My are blooming like crazy.
