Back after 7 months

wow, great thread Andy. Great documentation as well. are you only stopping because they arent marketable, or do you need a break as well. How many have you succesfully raised? I think a pair of onyx clowns would be extremely marketable just about anywhere.

Maybe just stand back and reappraise the selling aspect that you are facing.
Must be a different approach that would work.
If ORA are doing such things, there has to be a real glut of that product to get rid of them that way. That products days are numbered! {and maybe ORA?? past history this year??}
Maybe just put yours on consignment, that way LFS get found money when he sells and the pays you?? or hwatever?? but ??

I haven't stopped completely. It's just a lot of work. Then after 7 months raising a few, and you can't sell them .... It's dishearting. I wasn't in it to get rich. Though I thought LFS would welcome buying captive raise fish, no matter what breed. I can't keep them all either, though my daughters want me to.

Successfully raised ? .... What you see in my photos ... about 30 + through meta. As the title of my thread states "Back after 7 months". My clowns weren't spawning year round. Now I'm not so sure. They lay eggs about ever 10 days.

Yes your onyx clowns are in high demand. You shouldn't have trouble selling yours !

Andy; sorry to hear about the issues with trying to sell off your hard work. A couple of thoughts have you tried to talk with more than one store? I know it might be a bit of a pain and maybe not an option? Maybe try to contact a local reef club & set up a group buy for the ones that you have?

I know i have this thread bookmarked to go back over when my gsm are ready, thanks for all of your help & suggestions as well.

Yes I have talked to more than one store. Will hit the phones again tomorrow to try to sell some more. I can always blame it on the "economic global slowdown " LOL !

Update:

The last 15 babies were dropped off at a LFS on Sunday. "Amazing aquariums and reefs" (Project Reef) is trying to sell them for me. Ali (Project Reef) placed the babies in a small tank with four anemones. The babies dove straight into them. This was the first time the babies ever saw an anemone !

I have only kept one baby. He's is in my 10 gallon fuge. I will post pictures later.

Thanks dazed. I'll be taking a break from breeding for now. I've been focusing more on sps's lately.

This picture is a few weeks old.

Nice picture, if i can't figure out what keeps killing off my batches by the 7th day i may just take a break as well. I have been really thinking about taking the sandbed out of my reef it's still locking up in places. I like how you have the zoo's starting to cover the bottom of the tank.

@FB, Thanks !

@dazed, raising clown fry isn't easy. As for the cement (sandbed) in the bottom of your tank. Sand is just a big septic tank waiting to back up (crash). I'm barebottom and love it. My zoo's are spreading like crazy, trying to keep them off the front glass. Also adding beneficial bacteria has made all the difference too !

Yeah i am on the fence with the sandbed. i have printed out the zeo & the brightwell info i think it was i read both of them and it made my head hurt, lol. I think you switched to the bright well products right?

Yeap. It's working better than prodibio. I use brightwell Microbacter7 and Biofuel for filtering with zeo supplements for extra growth and color.

are you using a reactor as well? with the stones. How much equipment & additives are needed to start using the system.

No zeo reactor, just my Phosban reactor with zeo rocks. All you need is:

Microbactor7 - 500ml = $12.00
BioFuel - 500ml = $12.00
zeo media (rocks) = $12.00
PhosBan reactor = $39.00
small rio 90 pump = $12.00

Less than $100 gets you started.

Hmm. I have a extra tlf reactor that's empty right now, do you think that will hold enough of the zeo media for my size tank, roughly 100g (net) water volume. I thought the media had to be pumped/stirred up in the reactor not true? Or do you just crank up the flow for a little bit each day? I can send you pm's to not get this thread off track if you prefer.

I don't have the pdf file here at home, but I'm pretty sure that is the right size for your tank. I just crank the flow up for less than a hour every couple of day. Than rinse the rock out in saltwater when I replace 1/4 or the rocks ever 6 weeks or so.

dazed,
I was losing a lot of larvae in the first week until I started raising them in greenwater. I'm assuming it's because they can see the food better with the green contrasting the food.
Do you raise yours in greenwater?

Choices choices what kind of difference have you seen in your tank with this method? would you say more/better growth, p.e., color.
