Back at it, Bigger and Better

Hello! It's been quite some time since I've logged on RC, almost two years according to my last visited tracking device. This thread will track the progress on my new build. Here's where we are at...

The wife and I were looking to move earlier in 2014. At the time I had a fully stocked 95 gallon mixed reef and decided if we were going to move I would start a new build on a new tank. Slowly sold all livestock then (most) equipment and was sad and tankless for a few months. In August a house popped up on the market we fell in love with and by September we had closed and moved in. The heat was on, getting our old house on the market in October. Loads of stress having two mortgages, two electric bills, two HOA dues and two water bills and there I was, tankless with no zen outlet. In November I came across a steal on a 180 gallon glass bowfront (72" x 17"-24" x 30") tank, stand and sump and it's since been sitting impatiently in my garage, waiting to feed off my disposable income. In December we received an offer on our old house and are scheduled to close the 29th of January, WHAT A RELIEF!!! Assuming the deal doesn't fall apart I should be able to start putting some real work into the build. I've slowly been picking up some plumbing parts and cleaning the tank and old equipment. I'll post my set up ideas a bit later on this thread, have to run to a meeting.

Oh, here's the tank when first arrived. Also not pictured is a 44x16x18 custom sump.

Just about finished the gathering the plumbing parts, going to test run within the next few days. Previous owner had two different caps on the overflows, I'll see how they sound.

Well I know I'm alone on this blog but it will be good for me to keep a record of this build (haha).

Finished soft plumbing tonight just need to tighten down all the connections, get a 3/4" coupler and PVC end as one return was to short to reach the bulkhead and mount some supports for the tubing.

Maybe tomorrow I'll be able to run the system with hose water for leak testing. Fingers crossed.

Nice looking tank. I love bow front tanks, especially big one! Are you going with soft plumbing because that what it had before? I'll be following along great to see this progress.

Hey Jreed thanks for the good word! When I started planning the tank I actually intended to hard plumb throughout, I think it's much cleaner looking, but just sort of decided against it. In my head it would be more labor, more mistakes and more money (probably due to my mistakes) and in the end I would be the only person who would truly appreciate it while looking at the tank as I have only a few salt junkie friends. I suppose the previous set up had something to do with it as well, why fix it if it isn't broken right? As long as it does the job I'm happy and can focus on the actual display.

I also enjoy large bow front tanks. Good luck on the build, I will be back often to check the progress!

Coming along nicely. I am going to a larger tank myself. I have a 65g and going to a 125g. Taking notes on your plumbing.

Thanks Dekon. Good luck on your upgrade! I should be doing a wet run tonight, I'll post the result. I'm gonna say at least 3 leaks with all these hose barbs haha

Alright well wet test went surprisingly well! Only issues were one clamp was too large for the 1-1/2" hose barb on the sump hose barb, the blank ball valve on the return side has a verrrrrryyyyy slow drip and the left drain is draining heavier than the right. I didn't put a clamp on the top side of drain hose barb as it's not as pressurized as the bottom/intake, I'll silicon and thread in a hose barb on the blank ball valve and route some 3/4" tubing back into the sump until I find a purpose for it (might reduce down for a media reactor) and well the drain difference is because it's in the garage and slopes for drainage down left from right haha. Took a little video, it sounds much louder on the vid then in person, also the return section will be lessened with LR rubble.

As of tonight the tank has been mostly drained. Next step, refinish the stand inside and out. Need to find a good time to get a couple friends over to help me lift this beast of a tank first.

I have never owned a bow front. I'm moving and there is a great deal on a very similar tank for sale near my new house. It's not plumbed but I think drilling it would not be a problem. Is there any differences in up keep? I have a fluval Osaka plan on setting back up but if I could back in time I'd buy a cube. The bent glass corners are such a pain to clean, they take so much scrubbing.

Duroc - I'm actually going to be painting the stand black trim/doors and blue-gray for the body so it goes with our house furniture better. Plan is to try and retain the wood grain but I'm sure it will mostly be covered since I'll need to use an oil based primer.

Scuba - I'm not really sure, this is my first bowfront tank. The only thing I can thing about of the top of my head is algae scraping the front panel. Due to the curve I think it will be better to scrape horizontally vs. vertically but not 100%. I should have tested during my wet run but too late now

Stand is mostly done as of today. Need to silicone the joints then spray on a bunch of water protectant. Doors to be done tomorrow.

My garage is being slowly infested with used tape and empty beer bottles.
