Have a 90 gal reef tank with a few corals and 2 clowns. Wanted a blue hippo tang small and a fox face to add to tank. From what I have been reading my tank is considered to small for tang or fox face. :debi:
What would you guy recommend .

I have a similar size...and have both... small currently... I have a plan for both when they get too big... I'm of the opinion that if you have a plan for the fish...there's no harm... enjoy them!

Get a One Spot Foxface as opposed to the Lo. I wouldn't recommend the Hippo but you can find many experienced members on here who have them in somewhat smaller tanks when they're young.

Agreed with the One-Spot instead of the Lo. No Hippo. Yes you can have a plan to re-home them or trade when they get too big. What happens when you plan on upgrading, but it can't happen because something happens financial or physical and don't have the money. Most LFS and hobbyist don't want to buy or accept big fish. We like to see our fish grow and grow in a proper sized tank.

^^^Good advice from Scooter^^^

You should only stock for what you have, and assume that they will spend the rest of their days there. If you can upgrade in the future, GREAT! Then and only then should you stock for that tank.

My tank is the same size as yours. I've been wondering if the one spot Foxface would help with creeping bubble algae in the aquarium because I've been thinking of buying one. I've tried every (bleeping) thing else and nothing seems to get rid of it entirely for me. Not carbon, not GFO, not cutting back on feeding, not zero phosphates, or zero nitrates - NOTHING! DON'T have room for a refugium or a large scrubber in the tank cabinet. Would appreciate any feedback or insight.

ok I take it that the Hippo tang is a no but a fox face is ok
Any other thought as to what will be appropriate for this size tank and add a little colour to it.

As previously stated, the blue hippo isn't a good choice, and they do grow fast. IME, there are plenty of fish stores that would take them, but the amount of $ they would give you for them is dismal at best. The most I've gotten for selling a fish was about 50% selling value, but more recently I've only gotten $10 store credit for ~$80 worth of fish (different store). It's a crap shoot, but if you looked hard enough you could find someone that would take them. just to be clear, I'm not suggesting you get one. Just that they aren't impossible to get rid of. The blue hippos are probably the worst choice of tang for a smaller tank, but you could do a yellow tang.

I've had a one spot before and he did just fine in a tank smaller than yours. Full of personality, a fun fish to have.

I've always been torn between coral and non-reef safe fish. beware if you want coral down the road (if you don't already have any), you'll want to stay with reef safe fish. If not, you're open to what I think are funner choices for fish, like eels and small angels. I like them so much I've risked my coral a few times by adding "reef safe with caution" fish to my tank and have been lucky so far.

My Foxface grow from 2.5" to about 6" in 6 months with very moderate feeding. He is a big fella with fat belly. I don't think 90g tank is good for this fish.

Why would anyone want to adopt fishes, quarantine them, feed them, watching them grow, then try to capture and get rid of them..... I just don't understand.

There are plenty of gorgeous fishes for smaller tanks.

Thanks Ron will take your advise and take a look at Live Aquaria website. Want to do it right from the start. Thanks to everyone for your ideas and info.

Any of the tangs in the Ctenochaetus genus can be kept in a tank of your size. The bristle tooth, kole tang, tomini tang. You can have a tang but make sure it will not outgrow your tank. Tomini's are awesome BTW. If you keep zoa's be wary of the foxface.
