back up power for streams???

Just bought 2 6000's and 7095. Was just wondering if Tunze would ever consider a back up power unit for these?

thank you

couldnt you just use an UPS? The same one used for backup power for computers, I use one on my my setup.

You should _NOT_ use a standard UPS made for computers on most aquarium equipment. The same goes for a lot of the cheapo generators or car power devices.

Long story short, search for "sine wave" and you'll understand. I do use UPS's on mine (run two 6100's for many many hours), but they're APC Smart UPS's, which use a true sine wave. As well, my little Honda generator creates a true sine wave as well.

It would be kind of cool if Tunze has some sort of power "auto sense" that would kick the streams to lowest speed (assume lowest wattage usage) when a certain outlet senses a power loss. This would keep them running for maximum time on a UPS or other backup unit.

You could use the night mode photo sensor.

The 6000s are DC pumps, they'll run just fine on a regular UPS with a modified sine.

That was a general head's up for all equipment. I wasn't 100% sure on the Tunze's, but wanted to throw it out there in case. I've seen a lot of threads where people have destroyed hardware. Better safe than sorry ;)

Yes, they do work just fine on the modified sine wave, infact the 6060 and 6080 which really need a true sine wave seem to run quite well on the standard APC Backups. It may not be ideal long term but for up to a day it hasn't been an issue.

60hz power is delivered in a Sine form wave. Cheaper battery backups deliver a simulated 60hz pattern and not the real deal and since synchronous motors need 60hz to run it isn't recommended. The 6000 and 6100 however are non synchronous so it is OK.

sjm817,

Use the night sensors for what? how?
There is a nighttime mode that puts the pumps to the lowest setting (I think) that is triggered by an optical sensor, normally your display lighting. You would need to have it near a light that is normally on 24/7 like a fuge light.

thanks a million Roger,

So the 6000,6100 need modified sine wave or will run off any back up?

thanks again

Any backup- modified sine are the cheaper ones, true Sine is the expensive versions.
