How many different strains of useful bacteria are there for a reef tank? If I were to get rock or sand from several different trusted sources would it be beneficial for biodiversity or not helpful at all? Thanks in advance

There is no evidence one way or the other on whether having different species or strains of bacteria is useful in a reef. It also isn't clear that what you are proposing will attain it or not.

The number of strains are too numerous to count. Science is just now starting to delve into the bacterial diversity of the oceans. Our knowledge is extremely limited in this field. We know many of the basic groups and types of bacteria that are there, but when it comes to the strain level we are still living in the dark ages.

It's a good question, but the answer is really not known anywhere in science.
