Bacterial Infection, treatment in DT possible?

My yellow tang has red blotches on its side for about 2 weeks now (bacterial infection). Not getting any better with garlic and vitamins on the nori and mysis. Already did prazi and peroxide meds for a week, no improvements.

I dont have my QT set up and it will take a week to cycle so i would like to try and treat in my DT full reef 90g.

Read they most people use Maracyn or Furan or Seachem Kanaplex but mostly in a QT.

Anyone have experience with it in a DT and any issues with your coral biofilters, and killing off of your bio organisms in your tank?

Dont want to risk killing off my whole tank but dont want my tang to die in the meantime while i get my QT cycled.

i'm afraid most antibacterial medicines will also kill the beneficial bacteria in the tank and thus the biological filtration of the system will be largely affected imo. it'd be like cycling the system all over again. i would just treat the tang in the qt with furan 2 or something and do water changes as needed. i'm not sure if you could use furan 2 together with prime though.

Agree. Treating the DT with any sort of antibiotic is risky at best. I would strongly recommend catching the YT and treating in a separate QT/HT. Another benefit to treating in a QT is the fish can be observed more closely, and it's easier to dose (i.e. you can control the precise water volume).

+1 and you can do the necessary water changes much more easily than in a DT with a larger volume. Plus you use less meds this way which equals money savings

I feel for you, I just went through a similar ordeal with my Yellow Tang. Had red veins on his snout was starting to develop small patches along with very heavy breathing to the point his mouth was stuck fully open all the time. I treated him with a single dose of Prazipro and it seemed to heal him right up. Two weeks later it came back. I then treated him again with Prazipro but for three weeks straight while doing 40% water changes between each new dosage. Fed him garlic once he started nibbling again and he then made a quick recover after that. All has been well for two months now. You can try this if your QT is not an option.

Glad to hear your YT is doing well. However, Prazipro is not an anti-bacterial agent. It works on external helminths (flukes, worms etc.) only. It is likely your fish was infected with flukes and the Prazipro cleared them up.

Thanks guys, well that's what i figured. I read lots of people have ammonia issues after dosing it in their DT due to the die off so ill avoid that. Already have my QT filled and cycling. So ill take the tang out...somehow and treat it with Furan or something similar.

I had great success with Seachem Metroplex when my YT developed red spots.
