Bad Hydrometers

Well my salinity has been at 1.25 for three days now and I have developed a hair algae boom. It seems to be a never ending battle for me. I have never had this problem before and therefore am not sure what steps I can do to get rid of it. I have taking all the fish out of my tank for now because I want to get things right before I put anything else in there. What causes hair algae to grow? Should I do more water changes to help with this?

Algae problems are fairly common and can be hard to diagnose long range. Water changes might help, but for most people, it's hard to keep up a water change rate that'll reduce algal growth.

Usually, the problem comes down to nutrient issues. Either too much food is going into the tank, or the export mechanisms aren't good enough. So, reducing feeding can help.

Also, better skimming or growing and harvesting a macroalga can be useful.

Sometime, more flow or replacing old bulbs helps as well.
