Badly frozen Tunze 6100 stream

A week or so ago, my siren started to go off.. I pulled out the pump and started to soak it in vinegar. The impeller wouldn't come out. This is the older style impeller with the brakes.

I've been putting it in new vinegar every day hoping that it will let the impeller slide out. Its been soaking for about 6 days straight now, impeller is still stuck in.

I pulled off the actually propeller and put the screw back in (it is a replacement stainless steel screw, BTW). With a monkey wrench, I pulled as hard as I could on the magnet/screw straight out. The brake assembly piece broke so now its just the magnet and a little stub of whats left.

I was going to try and carefully drill out the center of the magnet and hopefully be able to dremel out the rest and just buy a replacement impeller assembly. Any other ideas?

I would avoid the dremel. I usually procede from here to either a slide hammer with a screw end that I drive into the magnet about 3/4-1" or I drive a deck screw that is 2-3" long in the same depth and grab it with a pair of pliers. I brace the pump carfully against a table so the screw and magnet are facing down and clear of the table. You hold the pliers and the pump and have someone hit the pliers at the fulcrum point with a hammer, use modest blows repeatedly and don't get anyone with questionable aim to help ;) If that doesn't work you want to drill through the magnet in 1/16" increments until it is so thin it basically disintegrates, it takes a long time to do it this way and can be very frustrating to find the motor died or you messed up and drilled through so I try to avoid this if possible.

I put the screw in about 1"... Then I had someone hold the pump in a prybar pull up and lever it... Then I hit the prybar with the hammer.... The plastic center of the magnet came out, but the magnet was stuck... We carefully chiseled it out and the plastic base of the magnet is calcium'd in so its soaking in vinegar.

I sure hope the pump isn't dead.

Roger,

Would you mind sharing what brand/model/size your slide hammer w/screw end is?

Thanks,
Jason

Not sure, it is a cheap dent puller I bought at O'Reillys. Actually I now tend to do something a bit different that seems to work better. I drive a 3" #12 sheet metal screw into the drive unit about 3/4" (not including the shaft which I break off). I then grab the screw with a pair of pliers and turn the pump so the hole faces down and it is braced so the center is open over a couple boards. I have a helper lightly tap the pliers and drive it out. It seems to be a better way that works probably 80% of the time.
