As a practical matter. Magnetic ballasts ar heavier and bulkier. Electronic ballasts are alleged to be more efficient but may not last as long as a magnetic. I would also like to hear about how each works.
Magnetic ballasts are an inductor that relies on the AC signal to create an electromagnetic field to 'resist change in current'. (This is as simple as an explanation I'll give).
Electronic ballasts rely on higher frequencies and are more efficient at 'current control' than magnetic ballasts.
Advantages of electronic over magnetic:
Magnetic ballasts can 'hum'
Magnetic ballasts have a 50 - 60Hz flicker. (Can affect some cameras when trying to take pictures/movies)
Electronic can control multiple tubes off a single ballast (in most cases. Check instructions on ballast)
Electronic are more efficient. There is less 'lost energy' in a electronic ballast. (Creating and collapsing magnetic fields take energy/power to do. Thus Magnetic Ballast are slightly more inefficient).
