Bangaii cardinal MIA :(

Around midnight I was looking at the tank with some red light to check out the night time critters (found a small crab that's now on my hit list). I swear both of my cardinals were swimming around then...

Fast forward to ~11am and I can only see one of them. Looked all over the tank, nothing. Checked over flow and sump, nothing. Checked all around tank to see if he jumped, no fish or water spot to be seen (I do have a cat). Fed the tank, turkey basted the rocks. Zero sign of anything dead or alive. Yesterday I found a peppermint shrimp that had gone to the big tank in the sky and there was two nassarius snails and a hermit around. This morning there is no such aggregation of critters. You think I would be able to at least find a carcas...

Tank info:
-Standard 90G that was set up ~2months ago
-2 small bangaii cardinals (1.5in from nose to tip of tail), and 1 purple firefish so far
- CUC of 5 scarlet hermits, 4 nassarius snails, hitchhiker brittle starfish, bristle worms.
-4turbo snails, small blue tuxedo urchin, hitchhiker snails
-several corals including a plate/fungai and an open brain which I don't think look like they've eaten a big meal
-tank is usually covered with an eggcrate top, but it's currently off since I've been re-scaping

Parameters as of this morning;
Ammonia: ~0.25 (I'm going to slowly add a half dose of prime to combat this. Yes it's zero most of the time and before I've added things)
Nitrite: I added prime to the tank before trying to test so figure the results will be affected. It's been zero since cycling.
Nitrate: ~5
^API kit. Hence it being approximate
Salinity: 1.024-1.025 with refractometer calibrated to zero. I've adjusted my ATO sensor a bit lower to raise it a smidge.

Is there anything I missing here? Think he's actually gone?? If so he/she is my first fish loss [emoji29]

You may have acquired two males, and that will not work.

True. I have been watching them for signs of aggression. One seems more dominant than the other but since I can't visually tell them apart Im not sure if it's always one sided. There have never been nipped fins or scrapes or anything. The firefish is somehow the boss of the tank and will chase them from time to time

Just really looking for an explanation so I can understand what to do about it, even though I realize there may not be one

He probably jumped and the cat ate him, I doubt a wet fish would leave any wet spot on the floor considering it has had several hours to dry

Bulk reef supply has a great DIY screen kit

Yup. Just sucks that I'm in Canada so currency conversion (which is always higher on visa) and shipping. Hence why I've just gone with eggcrate. But it's probably worth is and I do need to grab a few things so it's time to bite the bullet.

A few questions about keeping the top of the tank covered...
- My tank only has two holes drilled for intake/return but I put in a herbie so the overflow goes over the side. Just cut a hole in the screen and feed it through??
- to feed I turkey-baster thawed brine/mysis shrimp in. Should I take the cover off for this? Or have some kind of hole/ access hatch?? (Tank has a centre brace so there would be two smaller screens)

Do you have the equivalent of Home Depot or Menards. They also carry what is needed.

Two females won't work out well either.

The jumpers seem to be mostly the males that want to get away from the females.

BTW, males seem to be darker in appearance when kept in pairs - at least that's what I've observed with all 3 of my pairs.
