NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! That sucks so bad!! I think you just convinced me not to keeo an anemone on my tank.
Hopefully your new bengaii stock will waist no time breeding.

Thanks. My clowns will just have to get use to sleeping on the floor (of the tank). :)

Try an elegance coral if you have the room on the bottom of the tank. My clowns like mine and so does my cardinal. Fun for all.
Plus it has the added bonus of not moving around on you.

Hello Sandy, I've been on a break from breeding. I'm in the process of starting up again. I have acquired new pair of very young banggai cardinal's that I hope will breed for me in the near future. Other then that, no real news.

I read about the accident :( I'm so sorry.
It won't be long before your having babies again. I have learned so much from a few of these threads here. We have 22 fry that are 9 days old now. I found what you said about unenriched bbs leads to SFS. I had no idea.
I just started adding cyclopeeze to their diet on Saturday. I mixed it with bbs, we have been enriching the bbs all along.
Best of luck to you. I look forward to reading about your success soon.

Oh, I forgot to mention that we have 2 pairs. The other male is holding eggs for about 4 days now. I hope to catch him next week.

I have two cardinals and i am hoping to breed them. I got them as juveniles so my question is: how long does it take for you cardinals to reach sexual maturity? Also, i have two cardinals only in my tank with a couple other fish. my cardinals are always together, at night and during the day. I don't know know their sexes. i know males will fight, and mine do great with each other. so i'm between male/female or female/female. my second question is: if the only cardinals in my tank are both females, would they stay close together like a breeding pair? I want to find out if i have different sexes so they can mate. Thanks for any help.

i've had them for a little over 4 months, and i bought them when they were roughly 1.5 months old. one is a little bigger than the other, but not by much

they are a pair!! they did the dance for the first time today!! how long until the eggs are in the males mouth from this point usually?

I can hardly wait to read everyone's posts about the cardinal breeding tips....yesterday I noticed my pair were acting very strange. They were obviously mating. The female looked TERRIBLE by afternoon. She was pale, thin and very skittish. Today I woke up to the mighty helpful male, carrying a full mouth of eggs. How cool is this!??!? NOW ... what do I do?!?! :)

I guess he does have a mouth full of eggs.

First off I am a wanabee breeder so I don't know anything other then what I have read in books or on the internet.

First thing is, is this his first batch, if so you may just wait until the next one because he may not hold them long enough for a number of reasons.

second is did your male eat a lot with in the last week or so. If he didn't there is a chance he may not be able to hold them long enough as well.

If all that goes well and you want to try to raise the fry then you can catch the male at about 18-20 days or so and put him in a breeding net. at that point you want to watch him close and make sure you pull him out as soon as he spits the fry out.

the fry should be big enough for baby brine shrimp, so you should start a culture of them soon because the cardinal will be ready to eat as well. make sure you inrich the brine shrimp so that your fry will grow faster and be more healthy.

i hear you can start to raise the fry in a breeder net but at some point soon after you will have to move them to a 10g tank or two so hopefully you have one of those laying around with a sponge filter, and you should put the spng in your display tank now so that you can get some good bacteria growing on it now.

anyway I dont know any of this first hand I have just done alot of reading on the net and there is a lot of good info on bangaiis

good luck I hope to be posting soon though with pics of my own cardinals breeding.

I Bangaii are pigs when it come to feeding but then I realize today my male is carrying eggs for the first time too. Very excited. They are in my 90g mixed reef. The tank is only 3 month old, had the cardinal for about 2 month. Planning on putting them in a breeding net if/when they hatch in the main tank.

I am looking into getting some bangais to try my hand at breeding. My question is I have a 30 gallon tall with a percula clown, lawnmower blenny, royal gramma and domino damsel all juveniles is there enough room in my tank or should I wait for a larger tank?

I'm glad I ran into this thread. I haven't noticed my pair acting funny, but I did notice my males mouth a little larger than usual. That's what started my search. How do I know how long the eggs have been in the mouth? Should I just go ahead a place the male in the breeding net now or wait a couple of days.

And what kind of "dance" should I look for in the future? From reading this theard it seems like these little guys breed like rabbits.
