Bangi Cardinals

the other mourning i awoke to my male Bangi with a mouth full of eggs and right now i have a full reef with some aggressive fish. i want the fry to make it out alive but i dont think my fish are going to let that happen. i was told by my local LFS to not mess with him b/c he would spit the eggs. i have herd of people using an urchin that the fry would use for cover untill they could scoop them out.. would this work??

sure it might-but in general terms only a very few will survive in a display tank. what kind of aggressive fish- would they eat an urchin (like a puffer or trigger)

i have a yellow eye tang, yellow tang, scribbled rabbit, purple tang, verry small blue hippo, a pair of small clowns, lawnmore blenny, copperband, leopard wrass, and the two bangi's. i know it sounds like alot but it really is a peaceful tank everything gets along fine

and the urchin would only be used to kinda keep the fry close and safe untill i could scoop them out and drip them into a fry tank

yeah i thought the same thing but its not possible to catch him.. every time i put anything in the tank he dives under the sand

I have my 1st batch coming as well. today is day 16 of holding so just another 9-10 days before spitting. From what I have read on other posts....if you think that he would spit them while trying to catch him then just let him be. I have read the when you think he is about to spit (ussually happens after lights out) then shut off all of your pumps etc. then catch them as he spits them. From the post that I had read, they had said that the fry are slow and very easy to catch. Another way is to try to catch the male after the eggs have hatched (they hatch around 20-21 days) so maybe a couple days after they hatch, say day 23. So that they have a couple days in his mouth (they spit the fry out around day 25-27). What will happen is if he is stressed and then decided to spit them out because of it then they are already hatched and it really doesn't matter anyway. I think I will choose the latter when I try to collect mine. It just seems a bit easier than having to catch them one at a time. I plan on putting the male in a breeder net that I got at the LFS and just attaching it to the side (just inside) of the tank he is currently in. I think this would be less stressful as the water would be the same etc... and there wouldn't be any shock (or at least less shock) since they will be in the same tank (water, temp, salinity etc...) as they have been for the whole rest of their term. I wish you luck!!

i havent read too much about it b/c i have been chasing around my little one but from what i have read unless i want to stay up all night for him to spit them out, most of them will be dinner..i never thought about the breeding net thats a good idea

I believe that they spit within 1.5-2 hours after lights out. If they don't spit within that timeframe then it will not happen that night. It will happen poss. the next night during the same time frame. Or so I have read. Can't wait till mine are spat another week and a half or so.

Hello dhood, try turning the lights on after a few hours of darkness. i have caught many fish this way, they seem to be in a trans like state. I just caught my male banger and put him in my fuge. he spit out one but no others yet. I just posted a thread before i read this one. not sure if i should force him to release the others tonight. Good luck....Mike

i jst found this site and was wondering what people thought of the CPR LARVAE CATCHER..do you think this would really work or a wast of $$$

This is a system that I have seen before on other threads for people trying to catch their Clown fry. It could be a waste of money depending on how much it is and if the material it is made of is of low quality...quit my job here, so on a bit of a DIY kick at the moment to keep prices to a min. but this is a system that I have heard that others have made themselves (in other threads) and it does work... I think it all depends on if you are willing to pay for it or make something similar yourself. For example you could use some cheap tupawear container and such) to minimize cost. But definitely have heard of something like this working.

alright thats good to hear b/c my wife bought two of them(not asking me) and i was going to try to send it back if they were not going to work

"i have a yellow eye tang, yellow tang, scribbled rabbit, purple tang, verry small blue hippo, a pair of small clowns, lawnmore blenny, copperband, leopard wrass, and the two bangi's"

You have all of this in a 90?

yes for right now i had a 125 crash and had to do somthing with the fish in it so they didnt die..i think i have worked out the kinks with it and im getting it back up and running today

just an update

my male bangii spit the eggs on day 14 on the first batch and now he is on day 9 of his second batch...the female was pestering him so i have moved him into a breeding net and he is doing great in there. the breeding net is 6"x8"x8" do you think that is too small for him?? i have a full on brine shrimp hatchery going on just waiting for the little bangii babys so i think im good to go on that aspect..

anyone have any other advise or ideas to make this a successful s possible??

its now day 20 and i still havent seen the little tails or heads poping out of his mouth from time to time but he still has a full mouth and i dont know if this batch just isnt going to make it or not...any advise you could give would be great

I think he will hold 23 days to full term. Once he spits the babies remove him or he will eat the babies. You can make a psuedo urchin out of toothpick and apoxy to put into the breeder net. This will give the babies some level of protection from being eaten until you get Dad moved out. Good luck!

alright thanks on the info i have made the urchin and even have a long spine in the tank just incase..i was alwayse told 21 days i didnt know 23 days untill just now thanks
