LOL the live rocks in my tank would be pebbles in this resevoir, will it be artificial or is he bringing in live rock? I cant wait to see this thing to completion, I would love to see some pics of his current set up if possible.
He said that for liverock he was having a train car full of base rock that is mined in canada brought in. If I remember right he said it was something like 22,000 pounds. Does that sound right spazz?

Actually, it is most likely a reticulating loop with DI resin for RO water storage.
by the way your right. and it works alot better than a standard di unit.

im not sure how many tons it will be but its alot!. and its from canada i guess. there is sone place up ther that has dead base rock from a reef thats was there before we roamed the earth. i guess its very fight rock that is alot like reefer rocks. we will see when his sample of rock shows up.
i think it will be about a half of a semi load of rock. some where between 17000 and 22,000 lbs total. it all depends on how big the rock is. he plans to use thorite to glue the rocks together. he used that on his 1500g tank and it works great with out creating a ph spike. im hoping to make it down there for a weekend to help him glue rock together. then i will really have some pics for you. im hoping to document the entire process of rock work. i just hope he wants come caves in there. that would be cool to have a 3 ft diam cave 4 ft long running from front to back. but we will just have to see what bill has planned. what ever it is it will be cool!

he is planning on a sand bed but again im not sure how much it wil be. i think 2 dump truck loads should do the trick. he he he he he

This whole project is just sick. He should get certified and catch his own fish. That would bring the whole DIY to a whole NEW level :)

He is basically going to a wholesalers and is going to pick the fish that he wants. He said he was planning on a school of about 30 blue hippo tangs.

That is going to be an awesome tank. With the cost of everything it might be cheaper to buy an island around Fiji. :)

yes but can you imagine getting to scuba dive the coral reef in your living room? If he did it right he might even be able to surf it!

Spazz all I have to say is thanks for posting info on his project and cant wait for more pics... ..... I wish I knew Bill so I could visit when its done....I now I live close just don't know how close.

I am:cool:

What is the plan for the reef structure?

Live rock on a series of PVC scaffolds?

Some kind of extruded material onto framing (Royal Exclusiv style)?

How many whale sharks?

well for you guys thinking of building a big tank here is some information for you on different companys that make stuff for building big tanks like this.

this is the place to get the epoxy paint to line the aquarium. bill is using the sta-crete 1500 series 2 part epoxy.

to install the pipes through the sides of the tank walls you use

link seals. http://www.linkseal.com/

here is the air operated butterfly valves he is using.

this is the grating he will use between the upstairs and down stairs.

bill buys his DI resin in bulk form from us-resins.
he uses nucular grade or semi cundoctor grade DI resin.

the tank will have 2 acrylic panes installed in the front of the aquarium. they will be sealed with dow corning 795 silicone.

i made a mistake on the information about bill's ro/di unit. it puts out 2800gpd. it has 4 ro membraines that are 2.5" x 40 "

he is getting his rock from canada. it will be around 22,000 lbs of rock. bill is planning on having alot of caves and tunnles with large open sand areas.

bill just got his first order of salt in. he is using redsea salt. he pruchased 2 skids of 200g pails which comes to 96 pails to start with. he will need to purchase another 2 skids to have enough salt to start the tank.

Would it have been possible to get a water tanker full of NSW delivered to start him off?
Might've been cheaper (and better)
