barracuda

I don't know of anyone outside a public aquarium that has the facilities to maintain one close to adult size. I have seen a smaller relative of barracudas on the east coast, not sure if they are offered for aquaria. I would imagine even a small one would need a quite a large, long tank, and would not be safe with many fish.

I went ocean fishing once for Kingfish and Barracuda's. It took me about 20 minutes to reel in a barracuda with the help of another to take turns. It was an adult barry and was huge. Those things have teeth like you wouldn't believe and are stronger than you can imagine. If you do buy it, make sure you know someone at a public aquarium who is willing to take it off your hands once it reaches a foot or so in length.

naw i dont think i will buy it. it was only selling it for 20 said it was a mitake its about an inch or long right now, the only experience i have is with freshwater pikes i thought it was intresting seeing one at the lfs

Perhaps you might suggest to the LFS they start checking w/ the public aquariums to see they would be willing to take it.

Oddly enough, I actually saw one in a LFS near me this week, only about 4"'s long but definitely a barracuda. When I asked the employee what they are feeding it he said he hasn't seen it eat yet. I told him to jiggle some silversides in front of it to see if he'll bite then...but he didn't think that was very funny...

I go to COuntry Critters but they are horribly overpriced. My favorite is Aquahut they have great prices and selection. Sometimes Sufolk Fish and Reef gets good deals.
Last month I saw a Barracuda at all those stores it was insane.

Where do you 2 go?

Where is aquahut crazed puffer? Did you see that japanese zebra horned shark at critters months back? 10,000$! Wondered what happened to it. Pets WQharehouse has some nice stuff but half the lights are off in there tanks. Yoiu'd think the would want customers to see there fish. Maybe there hiding something. Be careful with your post don't want you to get in trouble again! Tim

Thanks Bill. I'm back into the hobby finally. We've met. I was one of the original long island reef society members. How is the club doing? Hope all is well Bill. Tim

The club has been doing well. Drop down into the club forum and say high to everyone :)

Bill are there any other good fish stores in the Suffolk part of LI?

myerst2: Yeah that was a pretty cool shark. I think I know the guy who bought it otherwise he got another shark just like it for 5000.

Been awhile since I've made the rounds of retailers. Haven't heard of anything new in Eastern Suffolk. More west, there's a store that opened about a year or so ago in Ronkonkama just south of the Expressway that is supposed to be decent, Suffolk Fin and Reef. Also some store recently opened in Huntington that was talked about a few weeks ago. Les, Fish Inc., moved North on 5th avenue. Can't think of anyplace else that might be worth checking out.
