it says they were killed by the temp going up to 84 degrees, that makes me wonder why do corals do good in thoes temps in our tanks? There are quite a few people on here that keep their tanks about 82-85 degrees.

i think thats an average temp over a few months

:sad2: I'd donate money for a chiller if they make one. :(

eee

they make a chiller....it is called 'GET RID OF YOUR SUV" ;-)

not to be a pain but, you can drive your SUV all day long all year long and still not generate the same amount of wastes as a single jet ride to the great barrier reef. Let's just not cast stones while in glass houses.

global warming is a real thing... yet nobody really wants to accept that fact.
yep...the media trys to make it sound like the jury is out, but no respectful atmospheric science researcher would deny global warming is happening.

Here is what we know FOR SURE:
temperatures are rising
CO2 levels in the atmostphere are also rising
CO2 raises the temprature on earth due to its absorption of long wave radition

what we don't know:
How much CO2 raises our temp
How raised temps will effect earths albedo effect

As for the glass house statment, why? Do people not want to be reminded that they are the cause of our earths demise? It is important for information to be spreaded, instead of sticking your head in hole. Also I never said that planes or other petrol based transpertation is good.

well, you are picking on SUV owners specifically. Some SUV's get better mileage than some cars. The fact is that most everyone here who has ever swam in a reef probably flew on a jet to get there. Yes, we should remind people that they are at fault, but we musn't forget that we too are at fault.

It's also important to point out exactly what you said, we know CO2 has been rising, but we also don't know just how much that actually raises the temperature. Further to the point, we don't know whether rising temps is the result of what we've been doing or whether this is a natural process that occurs on earth. We simply don't have the historical information to really know. There is no question that at various times in the history of this planet, the average temperatures have risen and dropped by substantial amounts, and often quickly. There have been ice ages as well as the opposite.

Well like I said, we do know that CO2 causes an increase in the green house effect by absorption of long wave radiation. So we KNOW that CO2 increases the temprature of the planet. And with that in mind why take any risk. IMO it is never a good thing to make ANY changes to the natrual enviroment reglarless of how hazardes or not hazardus they seem now.

What we don't know is the other parts of the equation. For example increased temp equals increased evaporation and then more clouds. And these clouds increase the albedo of the earth. Which could cause a cooling effect. On the other hand the increased temp could (and is) reduce the polar caps and other snow masses. Which then reduce the earths albedo. Which thus creates a positive feedback loop. We just don't know, so why take any chances.

We know enough that we are increasing the temp of the earth (99% of atmospheric scientest would aggree). We just don't know how much we are raising the temprature.

p.s. incase you don't know the albedo is the amount of energy (from the sun) that is immediatly reflected back into space....so the higher this number the cooler it is because we are not traping or absorbing the energy from the sun.

Well, if you take that approach, then we should be living in a pre-steam engine era. And let me add that coming from a bunch of hobbyists who spend their free time enslaving fish and endorsing the theft of corals from reefs all over the world (myself included), I think this discussion has it's share of hypocrisy.

That said, I appreciate where you are coming from, and there is no question that as a country, and as a race of beings on this planet, we could spend much more of our time and energy trying to ensure that the planet is a better, cleaner place to live.

I aggree, I am a hyprocrit (sp?). I do what I can but it is very very hard to live without any impact. I do get only captive breed fish, or fish that are donated to me because they can not stay in there current tank. Also ALL my corals come from frags. As to try to prevent the further destruction/harvesting of our reefs. I will not deny that I am a hyporcit. But every little bit helps. The way I look at natural resources is:
"If it aint grown, it was mined.....and mined resources are finate, and offten destroy the earth"

Sorry, I know I am just pounding this nail over and over again. But it is very important for EVERYONE to make a step so that there children can enjoy the beautiful earth that we all enjoy.

NICE. Or maybe put a fan on the sump, er I mean, at the edge of the beach blowing on the water's surface?

eee
