Barrier Reef Bleaching Pic

I agree hypocrite. Always placing the blame. Don't act like you are not at fault for a creature beilng expelled. Where did the captive bred's parent come from? Or its parent? Just because you aren't at the bottom of the chain doesn't mean you don't contribute to the displacement of wildlife. We all contribute.

it says they were killed by the temp going up to 84 degrees, that makes me wonder why do corals do good in thoes temps in our tanks? There are quite a few people on here that keep their tanks about 82-85 degrees.

again 84 degrees kills corals???? how can that be?

I think that everyone should be responisible and ethical especially when it comes to the name that we give our hobby. I also know that although global warming is occurring there are many contributing factors (including natural ones) and not one scientist can directly attribute global warming to polution. That doesn't mean you shouldn't be responsible for yourself.

If your going to point fingers point at he military for flying, or commercial jets for flying. Planes are dumping **** over the water all the time. Not to mention shuttles dumping things. Cars while in large may be a big factor, plants planes and other factors are a much larger cause than a car will ever be.

Go drive electric cars or those that run off cooking oil or grease if your really that worried. You cant really get mad when your/ myself are doing the same thing as everyone else.

Its a sad thing to see but if your not part of the solution your part of the problem. buck up and stop whining.

i think it is somewhat arrogant to think that we can cause global warming. what about the earth's natural cycles? The sun is actually getting hotter every day, so what do we do about that?? I'm not anti-enviromental i just think people need to think instead of having the kneejerk reaction that most have. Check out the book "State of Fear" it is fiction but it might open your eyes to the fact that a lot of the envioronmentalist claims are nothing but a load. There is two sides to every story.

yes there are two sides to every story. And no one here is claiming that we are 100% the cause of global warming. There are a lot of natural effects that are occuring as well. What I and others are saying is that we are ADDING to that natural process. We know and have proven that CO2 incrases the absorption of longwave radiation (ie infared). So we KNOW that we are adding to the state of global warming. How much we are adding is unkown, becuase like I said earlier there are a lot of natural factors as well as negative and positive feedbacks we are not sure how will effect the state. And that is where the debate comes in. Considering that most people don't even understand how the green house effect works, it is funny how so many can be so strong oppionned on such a topic (not trying to jab at anyone who has posted, just been my observation over the years).

I think that was a mistake the reporter made in converting from degrees C to degrees F. The temperatures, which caused bleaching, were 34C (93F). Temperatures, which caused the extensive bleaching in the Caribbean last summer, were around 33C (91F).

Here's a reference which talks about the bleaching threshold temperature for the coral on the Great Barrier Reef.

i think this thread is getting a LITTLE out of hand. yes, we humens being humens pollute in some way or another, but there are many things that have the same cause. 1 volcanic eruption (can't remember the name-mainly cause it was a hard word :p)released more CO2 than man kind has in it's entire history. there is no way that all(if any) of us will agree. lets just stop throwing guilt at one another ok.

everyone take a breath and chill. none of us walk on water :)

by the way, i'm calculating the design for the ULTRA-CHILL chiller right now :D

solution. when they build a space elevator run a pipe up it and pump water into space to cool. then back to earth ;)
problom.. ehh solved i guess

Im sure Coral reefs have bleached long before humans arrived. It is just part of the circle. The reefs will die, then before you know it (or well, maybe decades ot centuries) the reefs will be more beautiful then ever. Let nature run its course, and we should just try to stay out of its way :)

BINGO!
I have read and watched documentaries that show that what we are going through is nothing more than part of a cycle that the earth goes through. From what they said in the show I watched, there will be another ice-age some day, and most likely some sort of mass extinction....

does anyone even read my post? Of course there are other factors....BUT WE ARE CONTRIBUTING TO IT...PERIOD

for all you math guys it would look like this (numbers are completely fake, but it gets the idea accross).

Y=sin(x) (normal earth pattern)
Y=sin(x) + 3/4 * X (earth patten plus our controbution)

We are making the natural process MORE EXTREAM. So yes increase in temp is not all of humans fault. But we are making it worse than it should be.

I look at it as part of evolution. Yes we pollute the earth, but I'd like to compare it to taking a leak in a lake. If 100 people pee'd in a lake, would it make a noticeable difference? If you want to make a difference, sell your car, modern home, all your electronics, and join an Amish community. Then try to get people to live your way of life...Do you really think a hybrid makes that much of a difference? Maybe if EVERYBODY drove them, but probably around 80% of car drivers can't afford one.

What 100 people and a lake has to do with evolution, I will never understand.

With that said, just cause your neighbor can't afford a hybrid, that just means you should run out buy the biggest gas guzzing, emissions destroying beast you can? If 1 person betters themselves, to help they're children, or your children , or your childern's children live a life better then you, long after your gone, then they've done a good part in helping you, and everyone else here.

Quit following, quit jumping off a bridge because 100 other people did. Understand, it's those people driving hybrids making your life better. Don't chastize them for trying to make where YOU live, a better place.

I don't pretend to do anything, because I can honsetly say to you, I don't. I drive an SUV. I go fishing, I go hunting, I own a small piece of the ocean in my home with species at some point that were removed from the wild. Everyone contributes, and while some things in this world you just simply can't do anything about, other things, some people do. I'm greatful to those people, if it wasen't for those people, no one would care.

Dude, did you even read what I wrote. I was basically saying what you are. I was saying that if HE wan't to save the world by joining an Amish community or buy driving a hybrid then go for it. But not to expect everyone to convert because he choses to. My "lake" example basically trying to prove a point that our impact on the earth isn't as bad as some people try to make you think it is. I find it funny that people bash SUV owners (and no I'm not an SUV owner), but they will drive their hybrid to the marina to take their boat out for a day that burns 10X the fuel of an SUV.

Look we ALL are doing things to corrupt the earth. Its billions of years old. I highly doubt we have even tapped what the earth went through before we were here. The corals grew from something... They can do it again. Thats life you live... you die. rebirth.

So stop the flame wars here peeps.

i will help with the problem.. send me a frag of every coral that i can fit in my tank and in a few years i will be glad to give a frag of everything back.. who else is on on this deal with me.. its win win....

I'm responding to this because I think it is an important issue and I would like to hear more opinions. I feel the problem is that global warming is a "theory". The earths natural cycle is a "theory" also. You can find evidence that supports and evidance that doesn't support each theory. Before anyone comes to any conclusion on this issue, much more research must be done. That being said, I do belive everyone should do thier part to help our environment. It is not practical in our modern society to live like the Amish. We cannot shutdown every factory that puts greenhouse gases into the air. We cannot stop everyone from buying gas guzzeling cars. It is important that we do research to help reduce the effect we have on our planet, but I don't belive we can eliminate completely any effect we may have. We have to strike a balence between what we put into our atmosphere and what we put into our environment, and what our planet can handle. This is obviously a complex issue that should be studied in depth to help better understand it.
