Barry's 29gal Coralife BioCube

I still use mine.

I keep filter floss, purigen, and some matrix in a media bag for my QT tank. I certainly could do without it now though.

Oh I use the media rack for the floss but I no longer run purigen or chemipure.

Occassionally I will throw in some phosband or something if needed.

Sun Coral Baby

Sun Coral Baby

Hi All,
I have been watching this small orange dot on one of the rock in my tank
for a couple of weeks. Well today I can confirm it's a Baby Sun Coral.
Check the photo below and look right in the center. The photo is not the best but I sure can tell what it is. The baby Sun Coral is only about 1/8".

New sun coral and Mini Maxi Carpet Anemone

New sun coral and Mini Maxi Carpet Anemone

Hi Al,
Here is a photo of my new Sun Coral and Mini Maxi Carpet Anemone.
They both have been in the tank about an hour when the photo was taken.

Very nice Barry! Never seen a sun coral that was that pink. What color are the polyps? Very nice specimen either way.

Homer that's why I bought it. I had never seen a pink sun coral before.
As far as the polyps they have not opened up yet. As soon it opens I will
post a photo. This makes number 4.

Day two

Day two

Hi All,
Here is a photo of my new Sun Coral on day two. After doing a little more research on Sun Corals I did find out
they Sun corals come in Black, Yellow, Pink and Orange. So I am sure this is a Pink one (Homer)

I love how many of us find a particular type of coral that speaks to us. You and Homer are both into the sun corals, Reef is into his sps acros and such, and I am in with my acans.

Great thing about this hobby is that there is something for everyone.

That's a great point soulpatch. Now who is the zoaking around here? I'm surprised that we're not seeing more, zoas have been all the rage, grow really well in nanos, and are very photogenic. I can also crosslink to some really neat macroalgae tanks in that forum section that are in nanos, so we have those checked off too. I guess we're missing an anemone-dominated tank too.... Always lots of angles, but I'm glad we have a few of them covered :)

I'm sure there are a lot of builds out there of zoa-paradises, but they're probably from a few years ago and may not be active in the nano forum area.

BarryV, I love your suncorals, and tank in general. I really love seeing people do cool interesting things that I wouldn't/haven't/won't do in a tank. It's also great that you're still able to keep a nice mixed photosynthetic and non-photosynthetic reef. I can't forget to mention that you have some great looking SPS too, nice monticaps and either M. digis or S. Hystrix corals too, and some nice candycane/trumpet corals, and some nice euphyllias too. We all have our mixes. It'll be interesting to see how the mini max grows.

I have a zoa section that is slowly coming along though I find it harder to spend money on a polyp or two which look so meager when I could get a nice rainbow acan frag for the same. My chaos and what might be mauls should net me a decent return when I am ready to frag. Going rate of utter chaos is 20-25 a head so if I can sell for $10-15 a head I will be making out great though it is a slow grower.

ReefWreak I am just a little concerned about the the Mini Maxi Carpet Anemone, it has found a spot
under a rock where it get almost no light. I believe they require fairly strong light. It's only been in the tank a couple of days,
I guess time will tell. Thanks for the nice comments.
Barry

While I do have quite a few zoa's, 10 or so colonies total, I'm souldpatch on the price for some of them. I just find paying 20$ or more PP ridiculous. Think my most expensive is a rasta colony of about 10 heads that was 100$(10$ PP).

the only reason I have the utter chaos is since I got it for free. I have been lending a Kessil to my LFS and he owed me from a couple other things over the summer so I got a couple polyps for free. The intent is to grow them out and resupply him with them so I shall see.

Thanks ReefWreak for ypur input. Friday is water change day I may remove the Chemipure Blue.
Just seems I should be running something in my media basket other than filter floss.
Barry

With your non-photosynthetic corals I'm surprised you're even using filter floss. I guess you're just changing it out pretty often to catch whatever isn't being eaten by the corals, and that's good.

Here is day three's photo of my new sun coral, starting to get a little polyp extension.

Skimmer going nuts

Skimmer going nuts

Hi all,
I re-mounted a couple of coral frags today with epoxy putty, now my skimmer
is going nuts. I have had to empty it twice so far. How long will this problem last?
Thanks, Barry
