Bartlett's Anthias

I am considering adding a trio of Bartlett's anthias to my 265 DT. I see though they are semi-aggressive, and am concerned that they may bully more peaceful fish. Does anyone have any actual experience with these anthias, and how would they do in a reef community tank? Thanks for the input.

they would bully other anthias, and thei own kind. make sure to get one male only.

in my experience, over years, they all turn into males and start killing one another.

but 3 in yur large reef will be fine.

I've had about 6 of them together and they all turned male on me except for 1. I've seen them work easier in large tanks, but they have groups of 10+.

Get a large group of females and try it out. It might work out for you in your large tank. They're semi-aggressive imo/ime.

People say green chromis don't shoal or do well together, but mines have been fine for over a year now. They shoal with my anthias in my small tank lol.

I think they do better in a group of 10 or more ...
Based on experience.since 3 will become one later on

I am thinking about possibly getting 8. I think that would look great in the tank with their color. The only concern is having too many of one type of fish, but I think I can make them work. Can someone explain why having more keeps them from turning into males?

I haven't had a lot of experience with mine but I'll share what's happened so far. I got 3 bartlett anthias all about an inch long. I had them in QT for 2 weeks and one started to turn male right away. I put them in my 125 and the one male is about 2 inches now. The other 2 females haven't really grown at all.

After reading everything I could about bartletts I believe a certain number turn male according to the volume of water. If you were to put 3 in a 300g tank I believe all 3 will turn male because they have enough room to have their own territory. I can't tell you how many you should have in your tank, but I would think you need more then what you plan on getting. I don't know if I got enough for my tank, but so far the other 2 haven't shown any signs of turning male.

I had a group and over the years they slowly knocked each other off...I have one large 4.5" male left...I have a number of different species of Anthias and the Bartlett and male Lyretail are the kings only bickering between themsleves and don't bother with the less aggressive spieces....in a larger tank such as yours you may have better luck...I think they are worth it...here is mine

I have a trio in my 265 and so far so good - only six months though :) They are very chippy though, constantly chasing each other around the tank. Although I have found Lyretails to be a bit less aggressive, my attempts at keeping groups always landed me with one eventually.

I have a trio in my 60 Gallon with a pair of clown fish for over 8 months. They are all doing fine, and don't pick on each other. There is the every now and then quick chase, but they all have their fins in tact and are doing great.
