New to the hobby and have a few questions on setting up the tank/sump. I have a 120 gallon tank and a 30 gallon i will be making into a sump. First question is where and how big of holes do i need to have drilled in the tank? And i know there are a few ways to setup the sump any good diagrams or pictures of your sump would help out alot. Does it matter where the dividers go? Last question is what size pumps would be recomended? Thanx OG :headwallblue:

Welcome to RC

what size pumps would be recomended

Personally I would go large and throttle it down if you need to, that way you have flexibility for the future. Something in the 1500gph range. Also I would tree off of the return line into a a few ball valves so you can easily take water out of the tank for water changes. Maybe one out of the tank and one pointing into it. Also, pumps go down in output over time.

You hole/s need to be larger than the maximum output of the return pump

As far as placement goes it depends on your overflow design. I don't have one but Bean Animal overflow designs are good. External and drilled overflow boxes make for a nice clean look.

Sump design
Before you design your pump you need to pick a skimmer. It will determine how high you baffles are and where they are placed. Your baffle determines the water height in the skimmer section so it doesn't fluctuate. Internal skimmers need constant water height. This guy has awesome sumps. http://www.melevsreef.com/allmysumps.html
Model f is a simple 3 chamber

I have a 140 half round and the largest sump I could fit is a 28 gallon. With the skimmer and return I could only go two chamber. I use part of the return side as a refugium with the plastic board I use for frag racks and a algae scrubber above it that feeds off a ball valve tee'd off the main pump. I have a separate smaller pump in the skimmer side that I use for my media reactor pump.

Most sumps are 2 or 3 chambers with the drain pipe going into the skimmer section.
Skimmer/Return
Skimmer/Return/Refugium
Skimer/Refugium/Return
The float for a auto top off would go in the return chamber

I dont like my vanilla reefoctopus the pump always has issues starting. A bubble magus is a good place to start and good for the money. I should have gone that route but its too much work to change my sump now. Deltec or bubble king if money is no object. There are a lot of good skimmers.

On the Web you will find a lot of people saying to get a skimmer with double the capacity. The danger with this concept is if the skimmer neck is too big you wont get a good foam head on it. Or you will have to turn it up too high and it will overflow. I personally reccomend picking a brand and model and then posting it on the rc sponsor section for that brand to get their opinion

Welcome to the forum. I'm guessing your in Tucson? As far as your questions they are deep. Best thing you can do is look at existing tanks and overflows and see what looks interesting to you. Mine is here on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSy-yu54PvU. Skimmer, well make it a good chunk of your budget because once you build your sump around it you wont want to change it. Dividers are placed based on how you want to process your water and or create refugium space. I would recommend a minimum of mag 9.5 for a 120G. If your on east side your welcome to come by and check out my setup and talk.

Awesome thanks for being so helpful. Seems like a great community .I guess now i just need to dig in and build it. Ill post some picks after i get the sump built see what you folks think. East sider also...Might end up taking you up on checking out the tank thanks newsalt

I am a far East sider, almost to the end of Tanque Verde. Between all my tanks, more than 1,400 gallons plumbed together. I'd be happy to show you all the plumbing, Closed loops, skimmer, etc. Just send me a PM anytime...

All good advice above. Skip the mag and get a waterblaster, eheim or other pump that produces less heat. The manufacturers will have flow curves that show the pump output in terms of GPH after head loss (height the water travels above the pump). Figure out what water turnover rate you want inside your sump. Anywhere from 2-10 times 120 is a good general starting point (so the 1500gph Josh recommended is perfect).
