That isn't a good alternative. If you have ecotech pumps get the actual backup. A ups will last for a few minutes compared to many hours on the ecotech backup.
As per a thread in the UK forum I am using a modified twin spot emergency lighting unit as a backup for my 2 maxspect gyres and advanced controller. Works a treat and cost much less than the ecotech battery. Can expand it cheaply by adding a second unit or individual batteries. All I had to do was disconnect the 2 LED lights, connect a wire with the DC jack (I just used the wire and jack from one of my old controllers) and connect a power wire and plug.
I use the coral box battery backup. They are about half the price of the Ecotechs and work great. Wiring them up is for multiple battery packs and pumps is slightly complicated but 2 of them will run my return pump and 2 powerheads for around 8 hours on low.

I test mine a few times a year and it lasts over an hour... I have a small one of these running the modem and router, and a larger one running the vortech and apex brain.
