Been thinking about setting up a nano tank just for the Latz...

Anyone think it's a good idea? In my 100g reef, they kinda get lost as they are only 4-5 months old and fairly small (1.5"). In a nano tank, I could see them more often and I feel like they would have a better chance to pair up. I could really fatten them up as well. Any advice? What would be the minimum size you would go with? I figure after 6-8 months, I can transfer them to the main tank.

Sounds like a plan. As pricey as latz are, I know I'd want to be able to see 'em. ;)

Where'd you get them from? I'm assuming they're captive-bred, at that size...

While not Latz, I have 2 B/W Ocellaris in a 40 breeder. They are the only fish in the tank and are quite comfortable in there. The female is about 3.5". After having them in this tank for almost 2 years, I would not want to put a pair of clowns in anything smaller. I know they can be kept in smaller tanks just fine but the breeder seems like a good fit.

My pair are in a 34 Solana; the female is about 2.75-3" long, and the male is about 1.25" long. I think it's fine for them, but it's definitely the smallest size tank I would keep them in, as they're active and territorial. I always wince a little when I read that someone's planning to house large species like maroons and tomatoes and clarkiis in nano setups...they really need a lot more room. I can see it in this case only because the OP is planning to transfer them to a larger system that's already set up.

Thanks guys. I've decided that you're right, and they do need a larger area to swim in. I may just leave them in the 100g.

oooh, I read about those! She works for the Waikiki Aquarium, right? Congrats--do you have a nice cloned BTA ready to host them eventually? (It's a combination I've always wanted to try.) :D

Here's a pic I took last week:

They do grow big. The female is about 4 inches and the male has grown from 1.5 inches to about 3, in a year. I had them in a 37 gal and thought that they were getting a tad bit crowded. They like some rock to hide behind which made them even more crowded. So I upgraded them to a 70g cube. Perfect size if you ask me. Some room for LR and for them to move around yet still keep them as a focus.

Thanks guys. Both clowns are doing great but I have one problem...They seem to hate each other.:( One keeps attacking the other. I had them separated for a few days and just put the other back in the main tank. I might just separate them forever if they keep it up. Any ideas?

A large clear breeder box will work for the time being i had the same issue with my clarkis, just give it time for the female to get use to seeing him and then let him out after a few days, but release him at night. It took me about 2 weeks for my big female to accept the male but it will happen.

Good idea. I might buy one of those hamster balls and stick it right next to the rose. Currently, the offender is in time out in her own Qtank.

The more threads I see about the challenges of pairing various clownfish species, the more I appreciate the convenience (in spite of the expense) of buying already-bonded pairs...

I couldn't agree more. I HATED trying to pair my GSMs so I bought the mated pair and I couldn't be happier!
