Hi, I am about two months into running my tank and so far the most stressful thing for me is water changes. I have a rubermaid container that I mix my water in with the desired salinity. When I add it into my tank, my salinity always drops. I don't understand why if I'm adding the same salinity of water to my tank, the level drops. Then its a two to three day battle of adding more salt into the tank to get to my level.

If your adding the same salinity and the same volume of water then I do not see how it can go down. I suspect an error in measuring the salinity.

+ 1 on that ...you could be measuring it wrong...what are you using to check it....also if you take out 5 gallons and put 5 gallons back in with the same salinity it wont go down....make sure you are mixing it good too....it should mix for several hours..to make sure its all dissolved....

I wouldn't expect anything except a refractometer to measure the specific gravity in your water correctly. So if your using this recalibrate it.

Yeah, its simple science. It can't just down magicaly. Are you measuring your salty or just going by the bucket instructions? Your hydrometer (or always in my case, my refractometer) might be off.

Don't directly add salt to your tank. Go out and get a refractometer and some calibration fluid for it. I use an atb refractometer and 2 other hydrometers and roughly get the same reading, but I'm sure the refractometer is most accurate if calibrated correctly/frequently

Are you turning off your ATO (automatic topoff) during your water change? If you don't, it will squirt fresh water in and throw your balance off.
