does anyone have any first hand experience with these fish living together? I havent found any definitive answers as to their compatiblilty other than that they are in the same family(Genicanthus). Any imput would be great

If you add them at the same time there is a good chance of success. However, if you already have one then I do not advise adding another due to deadly aggression.

Add them together. :)

I have a swallowtail and love it; however, I think the bellus is prettier.

I agree with BangkokMatt. Add them together. That said, I like the looks of the female Bellus (I have a pair) the best of the two.

I have them both. They went through QT together in a 50. Both are females.

I used to have a female Swallow Tail and a female Watanabei and they were fine together. The Swallow tail was in the tank for at least 6 months prior to adding the Watanabei. Now the Swallow Tail was only 3" and the Watanabei was 5". I wouldn't try this with males though. This was just my experience.

Yeah I want to do a male watinabie, and a female bellus....yeah that would be sweet :)

But yeah most of these angles are pretty mellow in my experiance, I see no problem adding them at the same time.

thanks for your replys, helped a lot.
i am able to get a pair of swallow tails locally, but will have to order the bellus, so unfortunatly i wont be able to QT them together, so i decided to go with the Bellus
Thanks again!

You will definately enjoy the bellus. But I must add that with time I got to like the swallow as well. I added 2 watanabe last Nov and added a smaller one in Feb along with 3 bellus (1M & 2F) and 1 swallowtail angel. They get along fine and eats pretty much everything from pellets, frozen to freeze dried food. In my experience if the watanabe and bellus were smaller I could see the swallowtail will pick on them and she seems to get more aggressive with time. Good luck with your bellus angel.

Thanks. Please post some pictures after the bellus settles in.

flameangel88 - Wow, those are some awesome Angels.

The genicanthus species are probably one of my favorite types.

Just read your 390 build thread and the new additions are going to be very happy there. Very nice built and setup.

i have both, but they are both females. the swallowtail was added several months after the bellus. they are over one year old as tank mates now. once in a while the bellus would "push" the swallowtail out of the way at feeding time. here are pics of bellus. can't find a good pic of the swallowtail.

quick note on these angels. when selecting these guys make sure that they are swimming well. sometimes they were not decompressed before they were brought to the surface. they would have internal damage to various organs, especially swimming bladder. check their buoyancy, if they drift or have a hard time "balancing" themselves while stationary, they could have permanent damage and probably would not recover. also if the lfs would hold them for at least 2 weeks, that's a pretty safe bet that if there's a problem it would show up by then. good luck, they are gorgeous reef safe angels.

Its great to hear that people have had good experiences when adding extra Genicanthus to tanks. I added a female watanabe to an established pair of Blackspots. The female killed the watanabe. It was very disturbing. I wouldn't try it again.
