bennerkla's 5.5 AGA Nano Reef Diary (Lots of PICS!!!)

Hey Jordan, what types of snails does Phishy have? I'd like to add 2 astreas and maybe some others....

Would a brain coral work here? Any suggestions for corals?

Put a couple of nassarius snails in there to churn the sand, or perhaps a cucumber (as long as it can't get sucked into a powerhead, you have nothing to fear). A fighting conch needs 2 sq ft of sand to get enough food.

Melev- I have 2 huge nassarius snails in there, but they just sit in the sand all day until I feed my shrimp, then they are out for maybe 30 mintues and then go back to sitting.

Sounds good.

I have a 2.5 gallon that I set up for the swap. I plan to put in some frags and let them grow out in there.

Do you recommend a power head or aqua clear mini?

I have a power head in there now... but was wondering what would be better.

This power head is not putting out much power.... so I was thinking an aqua clear mini would be best because you can control your power and it would be doing some good to the tank.

Jordan- Just use the AC for filtration. I'll come by Phishy's around 11:00 on Saturday, maybe noon. What is his name, Sedar?

bennerkla, could i use a biowheel 330 as a refugium on 1 half like your filter and use the other half for carbon? ps i am quite impressed with you tank

Sure, not quite sure what a biowheel looks like, don't know how much space the wheel takes up, but if there is a large empty space it could easily be used for a refugium.

thanks for the comment!

No Bio-wheel. It will just become a hotbed for nitrates. If you have LR. that will be more than sufficient to take care of what a "bio-wheel" is supposed to take care of in a fresh water system.

i agree with rocket... if you have an established lr system, try to remoce, bioballs, filters, etc as they are hotbeads for nitrates. IMO, if you are stuck on filter pads, creat a sock that fits over your return and clean it often. otherwise, let the lr do the work

Great thread Ben, your progress pictures show the good and the bad of starting a new tank and is great for any new beginner with nanos.

Comment: Have you ever thought of putting something over the hole on the side of your canopy to give it a more "finished" look? Something like one of those plastic covers or stainless "grates"?

Thanks guys.

Spe934 I've thought about it, but I didn't want it to take away from the perfect rectangle it is. I might just be overthinking though, I should give it a try, where could I buy one?

The problem is that I routered the hole there. If I hadn't routered it, I think it would be fine. I'll try one out if I can find one.

I have video of my tank, which I'll post tonight!

cya guys,

bennerkla
