bennerkla's 5.5 AGA Nano Reef Diary (Lots of PICS!!!)

Thanks. Question:

Would adding Kent's Micro-Vert 2 times a week do anything for my tank?

Also, which snails eat red slime algae?

Thanks.

The Red Footed Snail will, according to the books. But they don't like to live in the reef tank temperature we tend to maintain our systems at. http://melevsreef.com/id/redfootedsnail.html

Micro-Vert is simply Kent's version of Phytoplankton. You can dose it if you like. Just don't overdose it. Your tank is small and it won't take much to pollute the water.

There is also very little that eats phytoplankton. Unless you have some very dependant filter feeders I'd suggest you skip it. :)

Thanks. The reason why I ask, though, is because I have seen a HUGE improvement in my finger leather coral in my main tank when I started to dose MicroVert. My leather is getting knocked around in the main tank and I was going to move it to my 5.5. Is it impossible for the leather to be improving from the microvert? Is this just a mirage?

melev, you must have a nice LFS. Mine carries nassarius and turbo's, that is about it. Not even ceriths or astreas!

I've been buying snails 100 at a time via group buys over the past year, but the Red Footed Snail and other cool creatures are all from a LFS less than 2 miles away.

I believe leathers feed by absorption personally. I doubt that the mico vet is doing much more then adding to the nutrients in the tank therefore feeding it indirectly. :)

The new stuff looks great! You could also try adding a fighting conch to the tank. Some have had success with them eating cyano, but mine won't touch it.

Jordan- Do you think Phishy has a fighting conch?

Thanks sugar. I'm adding a finger leather coral today because he keeps getting picked on in my main tank. I'll post a picture once he opens up!!

Ben

I'll look into them.

Here are some updated pics, enjoy!

Cya guys!

Ben

wow. I wish I had that kinda money when I was 17.

Heck, I wish I had that kinda money right now! I could finally afford to upgrade my lighting!...or pay down my student loans a bit...no...no...definatly the lighting.

lol rocket.

That is about the amount of money I've spent on this tank so far. $420. Sure does put it in prospective.....

Like I said before: Having an ocean in your bedroom: priceless.

Of course, I have watched each episode maybe 5-15 times.

Lois- "Great, we're going over to Joe and Bonnie's, I don't have to cook dinner."

Peter-"No no, Lois, go ahead and cook anyway and then throw it out, I don't want you getting rusty."

Many good laughs to that show.

My leather is starting to open up, I'll post a pic soon.

Cya guys,

Ben

A fighting conch would not last long in that small of a tank. They need a good deal of space.

My battle with cyano ended with nassarius snails and frequent water changes.

If you go to Phishy's.... I will be there from 10-2 saturday.

* Is that a motion picture of your wall? Or just a picture? Looks very cool.
