bennerkla's 5.5 AGA Nano Reef Diary (Lots of PICS!!!)

Thanks man. I loved it too, but it shouldn't be too long before it's up again. The only hard part will be trying to get livestock and corals in Blacksburg. :(

i just read through this entire thread, for about 2hrs or so?? lol
Really an inspiration to those of us setting up a 5.5g lol
*watches paint dry on back of my 5.5g to be (gettin' rock 2morrow)*

That REALLY sucks about the heater, and now you have me all worried, cus that's the same heater that i run on all my tanks (that brand atleast), but your reading through this for 27 pages, just havin' it build up and up, and then CRASH

Hey man, sry for your loss

that sucks man! i remember when you started this thread. in fact, i shamelessy ripped you off and now have that maldive island poster hanging over my 29. definitely take that tank with you to college, i've lugged my 29 through 2 moves, and am about to transfer again after summer

Hey Ben, where did you get your auto topoff thing? I remember you put it in a little film canister and it seemed to work well for you, but I can't find anything that looks similar and am wanting to stabilize my salinity in my 10G a little better.

Thanks! Looking forward to the resurrection of your 'lil 5.5.

Wareagle- it was simply a film canister drilled to allow water flow, a float switch fits perfectly in there. Remember to put the top on the canister, this will prevent ANY snails getting inside.

I actually think I'm going to start a 10 gallon nano when I get to college, because i have a full size clownfish in my 75 that I really want to keep in college, but the 5.5 is just too small. So I might do this same type of thing with a 10 gallon, not sure yet.

Hopefully there is a good LFS near Virginia Tech, if not, I might be in trouble....

Road trip back to C-BUS to pay a visit to Phishy :p

Those Tronic heaters suck ... I had one on my old 35 gal. and it was a horrible heater and never actually kept my temp at what I set the heater to. Sorry about your tank Nerk!

I would call the company and ask for some compensation.... You have all the pics to provide proof and details. It would not hurt to try and provide them with this forum so they see how many people have followed you progress. Couldn't hurt to try...

Very good idea, if I have some time this week I'll try it. I'm really busy with all this graduation stuff, but I'll post here after I call. Thanks neverwouldof.

6 hour road trip to Phishy is doable :D

Alright guys, now that my nano is gone, and my 75 gallon will be gone in a matter of weeks, I have no fish tank. This is bad, so in order to counter this problem I've decided to upgrade my hood.

This is my new, lonely desk, although I think the Buckeye bobbleheads fit the void nicely...

I currently have a thread up asking how to upgrade my hood to a 70 watt HQI MH. Although many people want a MH for the SPS corals, the main reason I want it is for the shimmer (blame me?) It really looks like the ocean IMHO. And I think my other corals would appreciate it too.

Hopefully I can take this tank to VTech, and on the breaks give it to someone in the local reef club to take care of for me.

Couple questions,

How do I clean these bulbs from the saltcreep?

IMG_3822.jpg

Also, does Coralife make those screw in bulbs in Actinic, to supplement my MH light?

Should I go 10,000 or 14,000 on the MH bulb?

BACK IN ACTION, BABY!!!!!!!!!!!

I used to go to tech. Are you liveing in the dorms? If so be carefull to leave windows open in the winter otherwise expect 90+ temps from their heating system. I had a nano reef in a "hexafun" aquarium that I salvaged from the trash can in west aj back in 2001/2 anyways your system is looking good I'm deffinatly watching this thread.

BTW there is one good LFS in blacksburg on South main if I remember correctly. There is another good LFS in Radford or was in 2003 the owner was trying to sell it and had been for years.

[welcome]

Maybe I can install a mini chiller? I know nothing about them, IDN I'm just a little upset that I probably won't have a fishtank for an entire year so I'm trying to figure out all possible ways around that :)

Bennerkla ... So I see your moving to the blacksburg area...well no worries about finding a good store... You've got a great group of folks in the local reef clubs around here...they stay active and allways willing to help. I'll bet you get your tank set up and you could have it completely fragged out w/ in 14 days... pm me when you get down this way i've got some things I could frag for ya ....and welcome....

Thanks Eric, I appreciate you keeping my nano alive!

Update

I've decided to go with a 70 watt MH bulb, I'm pretty sure I'm getting the 10k Ushio HQI bulb from illuming.com, it was 55 bucks, plus 8 for the HQI socket (which I'm hoping I can simply drill to the top of my canopy), plus shipping, so probably 75 bucks. I'm also getting a ballast off of eBay, so I should have it all setup in less than a month.

Anyone have any complaints about the 10k bulb? The 20k is too blue for me, maybe a 14 would work better.

Thanks guys, I'll let you know when I order and get in.

-Ben
