I'm getting ready to build my stand next week.
I plan to use this template for the frame:

I've been wondering if the purple 2x4s are really necessary, but see no real reason to leave them out. I'm a little surprised that there isn't a vertical support in the middle of the front and back panels, but I suppose this is a pretty common design for the frame and should be fine. I'd prefer the front not have a center brace.
I'd like to skin it something like this, with the rounded corners and top/bottom trim:

I'll need to stain my stand considerably darker as I have dark (black?) walnut furniture. Anyone have any recommendations on plywood to use for the skin? I know pine can have a lot of knots which I will want to avoid. I was thinking maybe birch, like in the link.
I am planning to build the frame 47" wide, 23" deep, use 1/2" plywood to skin it, making a total of 48"x24", which are the tank dimensions.
Couple things I could use feedback on:
(1) Any problem with having the edges of the tank supported by the plywood? I don't see why there would be, but thought I'd ask.
(2) I'd like to avoid discoloration from using the wood filler. Any advice on this? Would it be better to glue the trim on and not use screws? Could I get away with only screwing the plywood at the edges where the trim will cover it and then gluing the trim, so no screw locations are exposed?
(3) I'm thinking of leaving the back open, and just putting a 1' plywood border around it. The downsides I see are noise and potentially splashing the wall. Upside is ventilation and easy to run cords/plumbing. Maybe this isn't a good idea after all...
(4) Instead of doors I am thinking of just having a huge removable panel on the front. Thoughts on this? I like this because I won't need a center brace and it really opens up well for easy access. The GlassCages stands use a similar design:

(5) I suppose staning/painting the inside of the stand with a weather resistant stain is a good idea.
(6) I've never stained anything before, so any input on what to use and technique is welcome.
On a completely unrelated topic, I'll be picking up a ton of frags (12), a frag rack (temporary housing) and these two clams in the city tomorrow

Can't wait to get the stand done, get the plumbing and everything setup and finalize this cycle. The rock in the tupperware tub seems to be coming along. Doesn't smell too much anymore, and some has some live-looking coraline on it, although there is no light on the rocks right now.
PS: I am going to have a family member helping me, who has done lots of building projects, so I am not flying totally solo.
As always, thanks in advance for all the help.
