Ben's new tank

No real updates. I have the tank and light at my house. Jut got that 29 gallon tank from Jake (thanks), that will be the sump.

I'm gonna get base rock to start cycling next week. I also need to get my BRS group buy order in next week. I'm thinking if a quiet one 3000 now for the return.

I really need to start planning for building the stand and figuring out what materials are going to cost. The whole project has ended up costing a bit more than I hoped, but I happy with the planning so far. If people are interested I can PM a $$ breakdown, but it isn't pretty.

Not much happening other than collecting equipment. Got some base rock curing in my garage. Once I build the stand, I plan to set everything up in my garage using some old T5 bulbs that I got with my unit, and let things run for 4 weeks or so in there to finish the cycle.

[X] Tank
48x24x12 advanced acrylic tank

[X] Light
6-bulb 36" ATI Sunpower. I also bought a $20 moonlght kit which I may add to the light. Got all the hanging hardware as well. Light came with a set of 6 8 month old bulbs and a set of 6 three week old bulbs.

[ ] Stand
Going to make this myself. Not decided on final details yet.

[X] Sump
Using the 30 gallon tank I got from Jake. I'm not planning to run a fuge anymore. If I need to add that, I'll worry about it later.

[X] Skimmer
Got a Bubble Magus NAC6.

[X] Return Pump
The RC Flow calculator indicated that a QuietOne4000 would be a good match, so I got one of those.

[X] Base rock
Got 45lbs from Steve at CoralReefEcoSystems

[ ] New Sand
Probably get around 40lbs. I want a fairly shallow sand bed, since it is already a shallow tank.

[X] MP10ESw
I have one on my BC29 now, and plan to use it in the new tank.

[X] Bulkheads/Locline
The tank came with some bulkheads/locline. I got an the rest of the bulkheads I needed in my BRS group buy.

[ ] Misc Plumbing
Need to make my durso and get all the PVC pieces together. Probably do this after I build the stand.

[X] New Heater
Got a Finnex 300W titanium heater.

[X] BRS Carbon/GFO reactor
Got one of these plus the media needed to run it in my BRS group buy.

[X] Pump for reactor
They recommend an MJ1200, which is fairly cheap. GOt the new MJ1200 Pro from Big Als for like $16.

[X] Filter Socks/Hanger
More stuff from MRS

[X] Test Kits
Decided I probably don't trust my 2/5 year old test kits so I ordered a SeaChem pack with Ph/Alk/Amm/Nitrite/Nitrate

[X] New Salt

[X] New RO/DI Filters

[ ] GFI Outlets.
I should have these on my tank already and don't.

[ ] Pumps for flow
The acrylic on the tank is 1/2", so if I can't use my current MP10wES, I'll sell it and get 4 koralia evolutions (the small ones). If the MP10 will work, I'll use that with my two old-style K-Nanos until I get a second MP10.

I was playing with the scape before I put the rocks in a tub in my garage. Here are some shots. This is obviously not final since it is all piled in a tupperware tub right now. I also have a bunch more rock I can incorporate if I want to. I like the combination of lots of open sand along with some archs.

Haha, yeah u have two of them in the garage for tank stuff.
Wife gets creeped out when I use the regular bath towels. Especially
When I get frag glue stuck on them :p

I'm getting ready to build my stand next week.

I plan to use this template for the frame:
http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1169964

I've been wondering if the purple 2x4s are really necessary, but see no real reason to leave them out. I'm a little surprised that there isn't a vertical support in the middle of the front and back panels, but I suppose this is a pretty common design for the frame and should be fine. I'd prefer the front not have a center brace.

I'd like to skin it something like this, with the rounded corners and top/bottom trim:
http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/...215-diy-aquarium-stand-lots-photos-first.html

I'll need to stain my stand considerably darker as I have dark (black?) walnut furniture. Anyone have any recommendations on plywood to use for the skin? I know pine can have a lot of knots which I will want to avoid. I was thinking maybe birch, like in the link.

I am planning to build the frame 47" wide, 23" deep, use 1/2" plywood to skin it, making a total of 48"x24", which are the tank dimensions.

Couple things I could use feedback on:

(1) Any problem with having the edges of the tank supported by the plywood? I don't see why there would be, but thought I'd ask.

(2) I'd like to avoid discoloration from using the wood filler. Any advice on this? Would it be better to glue the trim on and not use screws? Could I get away with only screwing the plywood at the edges where the trim will cover it and then gluing the trim, so no screw locations are exposed?

(3) I'm thinking of leaving the back open, and just putting a 1' plywood border around it. The downsides I see are noise and potentially splashing the wall. Upside is ventilation and easy to run cords/plumbing. Maybe this isn't a good idea after all...

(4) Instead of doors I am thinking of just having a huge removable panel on the front. Thoughts on this? I like this because I won't need a center brace and it really opens up well for easy access. The GlassCages stands use a similar design: http://glasscages.com/?sAction=ViewCat&lCatID=7

(5) I suppose staning/painting the inside of the stand with a weather resistant stain is a good idea.

(6) I've never stained anything before, so any input on what to use and technique is welcome.

On a completely unrelated topic, I'll be picking up a ton of frags (12), a frag rack (temporary housing) and these two clams in the city tomorrow :)

Can't wait to get the stand done, get the plumbing and everything setup and finalize this cycle. The rock in the tupperware tub seems to be coming along. Doesn't smell too much anymore, and some has some live-looking coraline on it, although there is no light on the rocks right now.

PS: I am going to have a family member helping me, who has done lots of building projects, so I am not flying totally solo.

As always, thanks in advance for all the help.

Ben you can get pre finished maple ply to skin the interior at Higgins hardwood in RP and birch ply with poplar trim will stain out well, but if you want the finish nice and even I would dye it and then stain it.

Give a call in the am if you like or you can just copy mine I can give you the layout if you want to come by. Grant

Hey Grant, sorry I wasn't able to call. Left the house at 5:55 to get down to the SF area early. Made a pickup in San Pablo, SF and was back in time for the egg hunt in Windsor that started at 10 :-D

Here are some shots of the clams I got. The squamosa is huge. Much bigger in my tank than I was thinking. It will look great in the new 60 though.

You can see the new frag rack and frags in the upper right....feeling pretty full right now.

Well, I've blocked off half a day tomorrow and a full day thursday to build my tank stand. With any luck, I'll have my plumbing done Friday and water in the tank shortly after that.

I was initially planning to run the new 60 in the garage for a while and then when the cycle finished, move it into the house. It is going where my current tank is, so I'd have to tear the current tank down in a tupperware tub, move the new tank, refill it, and transfer the livestock.

I'm starting to rethink this given that I don't have an efficient way to move 80 gallons (60 + sump) of water, and I don't want to tear down the aquascape once I get it set. I'm now thinking of tearing down the BC29, moving it to the other side of the room, and then putting everything back in it. Then I can setup the new tank in it's final location, and xfer after the cycle completes. The livestock will be out of a proper tank for less time this way too. Any thoughts on how bad of a cycle I am going to kick up in my BC29 moving it? Any cycle?

I don't think you will see much of a cycle at all. Just take out all your livestock and live rock. Then take out all your water and leave the sandbed in(try to disturb the sandbed as little as possible). Then move the tank and sand, add half of old water and rest new water. Shouldn't be too hard. Also maybe run some extra carbon. Hope that helps.

Well, that sounds like the new plan. Although, the wife wants be to wait until after her sister's wedding shower on Saturday. I doubt I'll get away with doing it on Mother's Day either...

Could even get you hurt, I know I couldn't get away with that but I've been married for 25 years.........
