Berghia Nudibranch Sighting!

Tonight I've had my first sighting of my berghia nudibranchs that I added to the tank back on March 7. After hurricane Isaac crashed my tank I got discouraged and let my tank go. A few months later I got a second wind and started working on cleaning it back up. One step in that process was to remove the hundreds of aiptasia now infesting my tank. I decided berghias would be a good fit for me.

So after adding 10 on March 7th I never saw any indication they made it. Tonight doing some late night viewing I saw a big 1.5" nudi (I purchased them at about .5") on top of a rock. I snapped a quick picture and then I noticed a second nudi! I haven't had any noticeable decline in aiptasia yet, I don't expect that for at least another month, but to know they are still alive and growing is a very reassuring.

As you can see by the rock he is sitting on there is quite a bit of aiptasia for it to eat, but not for long!

Congratulations on seeing that they are still alive. That's so cool. You'll have to update us then the aiptasia start to go away.

I have aiptasia issues too. What fish do you have in your tank? I'm concerned that my six line wrasse, yellow wrasse or coris wrasse will just eat them.

I don't have any wrasses. I hear they don't work well with berghia, so that may not be the best option for you. I have a banggai, two clowns, 3 anthias, a damsel, a blue tang (who is going to a new 800g home soon, she is getting too big), and a mandarin. I hear peppermint shrimp will eat berghia too.

Good news! I'm looking into getting a few for my tank, it went a good while with no aips until very recently, now they are getting out of hand pretty quickly, on the glass, power heads, rocks, & many more tiny ones popping up, I hate them & think a few large nudis would help my situation before it gets much worse.

Spotted two more tonight. Couldn't get a clear picture as they were in a weird spot. I couldn't see the whole bodies so I can't tell if they are the same size as the ones spotted last night, but they look smaller.

Edit: Make that three. Still couldn't get a decent shot, I need to get a decent flash for my hot shoe, this built-in one isn't cutting it for night photos.

Ya they always seem to hide in every crack or crevice, I recently spotted my previously thought dead sea cucumber that I last saw five or six months before.

Very cool. Do they look like they are eating the aspistias?
I put 20 in my 75 on Good Friday. Still waiting to see if they are alive and reproducing. Ive been trying to hold off Kalking the aspistia like I usally do so not to kill any newties. I wish my SPS colonies grew as good as I can grow aspistias :fun4:

It's hard to tell what they are doing. I caught this one cruising around on his way to the other side of the rock, he didn't stop to eat along the way. Occasionally I see them sitting still in one spot for awhile, but it always seems to be at a strange angle so I can't see what they are doing. This guy was only a few inches from the glass, so it's the best picture I've gotten of them yet.

I've had a lot of sightings the last few nights, 5 at a time easily. They are definitely out in force. Tonight I caught this guy cruising on the glass about 30 minutes before lights out. This is the first time I've seen one during the day. Please excuse the dirty glass and bad colors, I didn't have time to setup a good shot. Not to mention it was under dusk bulbs which in my tank are just 2 Blue+.

Thank you.

I have to say, these work very well for heavy infestations in tanks that don't have berghia predators. Highly recommended.

I've got a melanarus wrasse, assume that wouldn't be good for the berghia. If I can take him out for a while, what about a dwarf flame angel? Gobies? I assume mandarin wouldn't touch.

The wrasse is the only problem fish you mentioned. Angels and gobies should be fine. Mandarins are safe. Peppermint shrimp are bad for berghia, as are large crabs.
