Best Gurggle buster

I've looked at three:

Stockman
Durso
Hoffer

I've got two 1.5 returns in my center overflow. I just redid the piping and would like som feedback on which silencer works best.

Thanks for the help: George

love the durso, pretty much everyone I know around here runs the durso with awesome results and it's so simple to do. Especially with the ammount of GPH that will be passing through the overflows, I think the durso would be your best bet.

Hands down.

The 3 pipe dead silent fail safe no bubbles whatsoever design that BeanAnimal has come up with.

I will never do another overflow any other way.

Got your answer right there, just go with the classic (2 hole) Herbie.

Heard (or rather didn't) a 120g with a Dart return pump pushing ~2000gph and all there was was the hum of the Dart.

Problem is with any of the others (Durso etc) is the air, by using a Herbie there's no sucking up top, lines are silent and no gurgling or bubbling in the sump.

All three (Durso, Stockman and Hoffer) work on the exact same principle. They all prevent a full airless siphon from forming by introducing a controlled amount of air into the standpipe.

There are MANY variables, but the fact is that ALL of them are only quiet if the flow is not significant. The larger the flow, the larger the standpipe diameter must be to keep the air and water from turbulently mixing. In most (all) cases there is a tremendous amount of air introduced to the sump. This may or may not be a problem in a particular setup.

I am not knocking the design, but rather point out the reality that goes along with them.

After reading BeanAnimals thread and Herbie's thread, I've got a lot info to process.

I've got two 1.5" return lines serviced by a Barracuda. I have an offset from the return going into my refugium.

Thanks for the help.

In no way knocking Bean's mod, but if all you got are two holes, the classic Herbie works perfectly fine.

The system that I mentioned with the Dart (two external boxes overflows with 1.5" drains) was up for about a year before being sold ran totally trouble free. The only issue with it was when it was first set up, was the primary drains were just strainers over the bulkhead drilled into the bottom pane, so could hear the water dropping over the lip into the overflows.

Never realized how much noise this contributes when everything else is so silent (still wasn't much though). A bit of foam solved the little noise there was, but could have also justed the height of the primary up a bit.

Herbie all the way!!!!! I'm sittring here on the sofa, backed up to the tank....ALL I hear is the hum of the pump, and the computer fan on my little tank's hood!!!! When I plumbed it all up I had 3 holes....two for the Herbie lines, the third for my return....works like a charm.

NO Gurgling AT ALL!!!!
