Best Heater?

Absolutely best option would be a third party controller like an Apex or Reef Keeper with a simple titanium heating element. Aqua Medic used to sell them separately. I know Aquatop has a 500 and 800watt. That would be the best solution.

If you just looking for a single glass heater then Eheim Jager heaters would be the best quality.

What one would be the best to use with the APEX?

I have only used glass heaters in the past...

plug it into an outlet 1-8, set it to advanced and use this code.

Set OFF
Fallback OFF
If Temp < 76.8 Then ON
If Temp > 77.2 Then OFF

On a similar water volume I have two ebo 250w plugged into the same outlet on my apex with a command similar to what's been posted. Has worked fine so far. But the glass heaters are a little big and I have to be careful not to break them when I'm cleaning the sump.

I also tend to think everyone oversizes the heater they think they need (here in the desert, at least).

I'm running a single 250W on my system (~190g total) and it kept up all winter. Only on the coldest of cold days this past winter (when it was literally freezing a few days in a row) did it struggle to maintain temp (meaning it stayed on for a while).

Sure, I might need some 400W to heat my tank, but all the pumps essentially act as heaters too.

Very true. I just have two in case one stops working. In fact, one may be dead now and I wouldn't know it. I don't test them...maybe I should.

Any Apex would do the job for a heater control. Check them out and compare the prices and features to what would work best for you.

I am still brainwashed on my Michigan reefer ways where a tank in the basement can actually get down to the 50s. :uhoh3:
