Best LFS in Sacramento?

This is a very heated debate that occurs very often......what I will say first is Welcome to RC!!! The second is that we have a great variety of stores in the area.....depending on specifically what you are looking for some may do a better job than others depending on what your looking for ie: fish, LPS, SPS, and Softie corals, drygoods, and equipment. Without being too vague, it varies from coral to coral, fish to fish....day to day.

I encourage you to visit the MARS link below the RC MARS forum link you used to get to this forum. There you will find a complete list of the local stores and suggest you take a "tour" and visit all of them, because they all have thier good points.

In addition, the Bay Area has a number of high quality stores and that list can be found through the BAR website.

I think however most will agree that the "main" stores to check out locally would be:

Aqualife
Capital
Coral Reef Shop
Exotic
O st
Yourreef

My mini-review:

Your Reef: Great SPS frags, good fish and food selection too. I've been there one too many times and always want to go back :) My current favorite.
O Street: They have some great LPS pieces at times. If any SPS, its usually rather overpriced for what it is. No listed prices on corals. I've never lost a fish purchased from them. Decent dry goods selection, sometimes have prices a dollar over Dr. Foster&Smith for IO and ReefCrystals, so great location for salt.
Capital: Some good LPS, usually brown SPS. Mixed on the fish quality - but they have been putting dates on when they received the livestock on the tanks which is a nice idea. Dry Goods are double-plus-expensive (compared to online).
AquaLife: Just checked them out today, very nice store, but very far for me. Did get a really nice Derasa clam though. Limited dry goods selection from first impression.
Exotic: Recently moved and their coral tanks are currently a diatom mess ;) Huge new location though, will probably improve as they bring more corals in. Their SPS selection before the move was mixed though - stuff at Your Reef is much nicer for the price (and overall). Store has a lot of potential though, I'll give it time. Good fish selection.

Thanks for those reviews :) Very helpful. I am actually not that found of Capitol, I don't like their coral selection.

Oh yes, Davis PetCo: They seem to only stock starving yellow tangs. Maybe a clownfish. If you REALLY need to have that yellow tang right now, they have it. Ich sometimes included.

But I have gotten some cheap plants out of their plant tank which turned out really nice.

You guys are also forgetting about Robinson Feed. where else can you get your fish and cowboy boots at the same place.

I was going to say. List looks good. But take Capitol off!

For fish its not even close. Aqualife owns them all!

Corals. I like aqualife. but Coral reef shop is good and for frags Your reef is by far the best!

One not mentioned. He works out of his garage in sac and also has a website. But Sam is a great guy.

So check out www.marineflora.com

he has some great Zoo's, best around in my opinion

Kdblove, I agree about Marieflora.com, plus Sam inspects every zoo frag for nudis! He's honest and always gives you a great deal.

i wouldn't place one above the other to someone asking (although i have my preference). you owe it to yourself to check them all out. make an afternoon of it and within 3 hrs you can check them all out.

In Cameron Park there is Kent aquatics which was ok and in the process of getting more tanks setup last time I was there.

Lees Feed and Hay (I think thats what its called) Is also in Cameron Park and is one of the best places i've found. I have gotten some very healthy dirt cheap corals. They have an good selection. Just get your information on Corals or fish somewhere else, the employees that can tell you the difference between grain types dont know too much about coral types.
