best light spectrum for xenia

hi all

I want to grow xenia in my fuge and was wondering the best light spectrum

do xenia like green and red leds? I have a 14k led strip light and was hoping this would work well

Xenia does make a terrific filter.. The light you choose will impact the color of the Xenia. Particularly when you are growing Elongata.

Why would you want Xenia in your refugium? It's just another coral and really doesn't take much nitrate or phosphate out of the water at all?

Xenia remove DOMs, so it will it will lower NO3 and PO4 indirectly. One caveat is that the Xenia must be removed periodically. I remove 7-10 stalks a week in my heavily stocked 300 gallon system. I've been almost completely skimmerless for over 4 years. It has worked wonderfully, and as long as you keep it from getting into your DT, and you've figured out the balance between nutrient import/export. It will work as a very effective filtration source. In the wild Xenia is one of mother natures many nutrient removal systems. They can be found near hotel waste water outputs as well as other nutrient rich water.

Here is a video of my Xenia refugium

That is pretty neat, thanks for sharing. I actually like Xenia so have a small patch inside my display. So far it has behaved rather well. Then again, I like soft corals so if it spreads that is fine. It can't be any worse than the Kenya tree I have.

I put xenia in my display tank before I knew better. I've sold quite a bit back to the lfs for other corals and supplies. It is work to keep harvesting it, but it does look cool pulsing and it is helping with nutrient export.

I have it in my display. It played nice for awhile.... but not anymore. I had it isolated. Then it randomly started popping up in place and it's IMPOSSIBLE to scrape off rocks. I gave a huge amount of the isolate parts away. Now I'm thinking about ditching all I have and pulling the main rock in the tank that nearly covered in it now. I'll let it sit outside for awhile, then let it cook in a bucket for a month or two. Ugh. Volleyball sized rock in a 40B... that hurts.

had xenia (pre-disaster) and it flourished...when i tried to add it again to a tank full of kenya tree it didnt do well at all...i think the kenya releases toxins that the xenia didnt like...

I just switched from T5's to kessils and even thouhg they were turned down, 3 different xenias all died. I was under the impression they didnt like the intense light?

hey guys

thx for the responses. sincerely appreciated
im starting to get the idea that xenia will do well with most light but since this is my main filtration sytem I need to make sure it will grow fast

AquaTDV very cool system the song born free went well. do u think I will b able to grow chaeto also or will the xenia out compete it

Yes it will out compete the chaeto, however it is good to keep both. There is a balance between the chaeto and Xenia that will tell you if there is a surplus of usable nutrients for the Xenia. If there is a surplus, this will cause the chaeto to grow more rapidly. However once the Xenia has grown to meet the demand of your system. It will out compete the chaeto and the chaeto growth will basically stop. This is when I know that the Xenia is in control. However if you over feed or add a new fish/coral the chaeto will begin to grow again to fill the void until the Xenia grows to meet the demand. Just take it slowly and allow the fuge time to be effective. I have 2 auto feeder that feed a total of 6 times in a 24hr period, and the Xenia fuge can easily meet the demands of the system. I still have plenty of room for more growth.

Here are some pics of pics from 2000 when I first started experimenting with Xenia and I learned very quickly how it can become a plague when you try and control it the DT, and then a piece finds a powerhead
