Ive always just kept a basic refugium of various macros ive picked up from my LFS ... nothing special, but i'm in the process of setting up a 85 gallon with a 50 gallon refugium and the tank is going to be skimmerless (atleast i think, havnt decided completly) so my refugium is going to be a very important factor in a stable reef.

What is the best macro for exporting nutrients in your opinion?

Guy at my fish club told me that Caulerpa was better then Chaeto but its harder to keep and needs more matenence becuase it can go sexual. Is this true or is Caulerpa just prettier lol? I could care less about looks I just want to have the best possble macro for exporting even if it requires alot of pruning and a 24/7 light period

there are pro's and con's w/ caulerpa.

1)it's prettier than chaeto
2)it sucks up nutrients as well as chaeto if not better

cons
1)it can go sexual
2)it does require pruning (more if you have alot of nutrients)
3)it puts out roots... it can get into your display which is another story in itself

and chaeto..
pros
1)doesn't go sexual
2)sucks up nutrients very well

cons
1)not visually appealing.. depending on who is looking at it ;)
2)it can be a PITA w/ broken pieces everywhere when pruning... (i personally got rid of that strain of chaeto..)
