Best Nano Tank...

Looking to get back into the hobby.

Is it pretty much the consensus that the Biocube 29 HQI is the best nano out there? In terms of lighting/filtration?

What are your thoughts?

O man no way. That’s a great set up do not get me wrong. But that’s not the best out there. It depends on what you’re looking for. The JBJ Advanced is in that same size range but has better filtration and the LED will blow the HQI away as far as par goes without the heat.

Now there are also a lot of new rimless nanos hitting the market. O buddy I am seeing some cool stuff. JBJ hit the market not long ago better filtration then the standard cubes. CAD has some crazy cool stuff. EcoPico looks cool. I am looking into getting one of the new Nuvo line of Aquariums.

Now what is the best for one person is not the best for another. Let me ask you this what are you trying to do with your reef? Then someone on this forum can point you to the right nano for you.

The BC is a great set up and truly moldable but I like the JBJ a little better if you’re comparing the HQIs due to the JBJ having more pumps and more cooling fans.

What am I trying to do? Not quite sure to tell you the truth.

Low mantainance is a priority. Also I'd like to be able to keep a lot of corrals, SPS, etc. Looking for a system with really good lighting.

I was also considering a nuvo aquarium, but believe I am going to go with one of those Pico Aquarium. Perhaps the manta ray 18 model. They are getting good reviews and you can get them in Starfire or normal glass. But that isn't a complete system like the bio cubes. You will have to purchase your own light.

It is in sense an AIO though, as it comes with a false wall and chambers to place skimmer, heater, and filtration media.

Good luck and happy tank hunting.

Dude if your wanting a lot of corals "sps" you should try to find a tank that is customizable. The reason I say this is when I have 6 or 7 Reef Guys over and we’re all talking about our SPS systems we have 12 or 14 “right ways or doing things” opinions. The ultimate goals are always the same keep cool corals and make them grow. But along the way to that goal people use many different steps to get there. I recommend you try to hook up with some people in your local area and go check out the tanks they have. But take special consideration of what you like about the tanks themselves not just the live stock. This way you’ll know if you want a rimless or a normal lip or even a euro brace. Do you want a canapé or do you want to hang the lights or do you want to mount them on an arm that floats the lights above the tank. You also want to see if you like a cube better then a long rectangle or what height vs. width and depth. Once you have all this info it will make your decision easier. Unless you already know.

My next nano as stated above is going to be a Nuvo system but I am not sure what size I want yet. I like it cus the back is open enough (on the 38) that I can mod it if need be.

Great advice!

To add, I think you have to see your longterm goal, then work it backwards. Think about your reef in maturity, the type of corals, fish, etc... This gives you the footprint that will best meet your goal, as mentioned above. Next I would consider filtration, you can go with a sump and add a beast of a skimmer, or go wtih an AIO setup, I have a Solana. My goal was simple, sumpless, a decent skimmer, and weekly large water changes. The 20x20x20" is perfect for me as I can build the reef vertically allowing for much growth and swimming room. So which is best is all subjective, if you want an AIO with no upgrades, your decision will be tough, otherwise, you could also consider a custom design and make everything to your spec... GL :)

Check out the Elos Mini, I am very pleased with mine. I would never have thought that an optiwhite glass could make such a huge difference. And I like the sump setup and the clean look.

Ill have to agree here, you probably can't go wrong with any option that you choose. If you want to get good advice, recommendations, etc on RC the BC29 and NC28 are both popular choices so you will have plenty of advice when it comes to upgrades, stocking, and maintenance. I'd really love to see someone start a thread on the new JBJ 30RL, so I say be a pioneer and go that route!! Cool looking tank!

If you want to have the best system. I suggest sump, ATO with Kalk. Building your own system isn't that difficult. And in my opinion it totally pays off. Way cheaper, and you can go with any tank size.

JBJ advanced vs. JBJ Professional?

Ive been doing some research online and noticed that there is a JBJ advanced and a JBJ Professional. Is there a difference between the two? The professional seems to be a bit more expensive but I from what I can tell they seem identical. The Professional isn't even on their retail site but they are on sale on amazon.com.

Anyways could probably do some more research online but figured someone might have the quick answer to this.

Regards!

John

INTERMEDIATE has 25 LED at 1 watt each, the PROFESSIONAL has 25 LED at 3 watts each, hope that helps.
I have the INTERMEDIATE and very happy with it.

The best tank in my opinion is the best one you can build! Honestly to get exactly what you want your going to have to customize it just how this hobby is. Some of the best tanks ive seen are just standard 10 or 15 gallons tanks that have been customized!

Dude hooked up my new Nuvo 38 and can tell you this thing is beast mode. Check this out I am using the two spill ways with the sponges media that is supplied with the tank, have added the Innovative Marine Skkye Light Utility LED for a section as a fuge, the Fluval E-Series heater (300 watt) in the center compartment, a tunze osmolator ATO, a bag of chemi pure elite full size, and still have room for a doc skimmer or a hang on. Not sure which I am going to go with yet. What I am saying is all of this fits in the back without any mods to the tank or sump area. I also have room for probes and more. With all that said I wonder can you fit all this into the JBJ and if you can do you have room left over for more? I love the look of it as well. I have to ask this can you adjust the led light array coloration on the jbj? If you cannot dial in the color you'd prefer then I would stay away from it. The down side of leds is that you can't just pop in a new bulb to change the color to your preference as you can with MH or T5s. I am using Par 38s and I love the color.

I have followed the jbj product for years and think it is top notch. I went with the Nuvo for the reasons stated plus I wanted a rimless display that is offered in the nuvo. Now that Jbj has one out as well I would look into before buying a unit with a full hood. But that's just my preferences. Hope all this info helps you in your decision.

My Nuvo 16 arrives tomorrow. Really seemed the best AIO at the price point. I am excited to see other Nuvo owners post up. Yours is dope!

I don't know about other systems because i have not been in the market for a while but i have a bc29 hqi and can assure you it will get you where you want to go with sps. that said, so will many other systems out there. I really liked the cad systems which i was seeing a while back. Have fun getting going in the hobby.
